I sifted through the noise at REI to find the high-performance gear actually worth your money. From $100 off the Garmin Edge 1050 to Giro helmets and Camelbak bottles, here are 19 technical picks you shouldn’t miss.

Welcome to Velo Deals. We sift through the retail landscape to bring you deals worth paying attention to. It might be a discount or it might just be a product so good you should grab it. Either way, if it’s worth your time, you’ll see it here. If you’d like to see the rest of the category, check all our Velo Deals coverage.
The biggest REI sale of the year is happening now. While REI is a favorite for the Outside audience, it is a generalist store; for Velo readers specifically, finding high-performance bike gear among the camping and climbing equipment takes some time. If you are looking for deals on tents, sleeping bags, or hiking shoes, Outside Online has already picked the 18 best deals in those categories.
For the bike geeks, I’m diving in with the absolute best deals I could find on technical cycling gear. If you’ve been holding off on a major purchase, now is your chance. If you are looking for something I didn’t see you can check the full cycling sales list on the REI website.
WTB Nano TCS 700c x 40mm: 65% Off

The reasons these are so deeply discounted is because 40mm tires are now considered too small. Everyone is running 50mm or more except that doesn’t work for a lot of bikes. If you don’t need a tire that big, or if you don’t have the room for a huge tire, then this is a crazy deal on a good tire.
Muc-Off Tubeless rim tape: 30% Off

Notice that pink roll of rim tape in the front of that picture? That’s Muc-Off tape which I specifically recommend in my article about how to set up road tubeless tires. I prefer Muc-Off tape because you can see through it, that makes puncturing the valve hole easier, and because it’s got just the right amount of stretch for an easy application. If you are having an issue with tubeless tires holding air it’s always the tape. Grab an extra roll and have it on hand.
Muc-Off Disc Brake Cleaner: 30% Off

If your disc brakes are making a racket you have some choices. You could try to figure out why but assuming they are in good shape you could also just use this and be done with it. Pull the rotor and the pads then soak it all and put it all back together. In my experience it is fixed 100% of the time. Simple.
Muc-Off 8-in-1 Bicycle Cleaning Kit: 30% Off

Are you noticing a trend here? I am a fan of Muc-Off consumables. I have this exact same kit (pushcased before it came with the tub) and I use it all the time. The cleaner does a great job dealing with the drivetrain, the bike protector gets wheels looking great again, and the various brushes all have their place. Buying the kit is a great way to start and the tub is a nice bonus for storage I wish I had.
Topeak Ratchet Rocket Lite DX Tool Kit: 25% Off

One thing I strongly believe is that most cycling mini tools aren’t quite right. When I wrote about what I bring on every ride to avoid a phone call home, you’ll notice I included a ratchet system. I love it because you can add and delete what you need so it’s tailored to you. Now that article actually features a different system but this Topeak is just as good and this is a much better deal. Start off with what’s included and if you need to you can always remove the tool and bits from the case and switch up what bits you have.
Giro Aries Sherical: 25% Off

I included this in the Velo best bike helmet buyers guide partly because I like the design of the light you can add to it. That’s just a bonus, though. The Aries is for anyone who prefers to feel significant airflow across their head on hot days. It’s light and airy with a very innovative set of safety features.
Shimano PD-M520 SPD Pedals: 25% Off

This is not one of those times you have to put a lot of thought into a purchase. Shimano SPD pedals are bullet proof and these are cheap. If your bearings are feeling a little rough, grab some new pedals.
Shimano Ultegra SPD-SL Pedals: 25% Off

I just wrote the entry above about how you didn’t think much because they were cheap and they worked. When it comes to road pedals it is worth considering your system a bit more. That said, you won’t go wrong with Shimano and Ultegra level is the best price vs performance level.
Shimano SPD-SL 6-Degree Cleats: 25% Off

I love when I can recommend consumables on sale. If you are running an SPD-SL pedal you’ll need cleats eventually, grab them while they are on sale.
Pearl Izumi Expedition Pro Bib Shorts for Men and Women: 25% Off

Pearl Izumi makes great gear but the Expedition Pro is a step above that. These are some of the best gravel focused bib shorts on the market, from any brand. The chamois is thin but lasts all day and the fit is perfectly compressive. I used the men’s link up above but for REI also has the Expedition Pro bib shorts for women at the same price.
Crankbrothers Candy XC unisex gravel shoes: 25% Off

These are slated to go into this year’s edition of the best cycling shoes Velo buyers guide and I have a pair I just started testing. The Candy XC shoe is not the stiffest sole on the market but it is an excellent budget gravel shoe that’s comfortable and looks good. I also consider the laces a bonus because typically a shoe in this price range would either be Velcro or a low quality single BOA system. Laces work better than both and they look a lot better too. One oddity here is that REI calls these a mens shoe but Crankbrothers calls them a Unisex shoe. I went with the Crankbrothers naming convention.
Shimano RC903 Cycling Shoes: 25% Off

I have the Shimano RC903 in the best cycling shoes Velo buyers guide and right now it’s listed as the Best all-around race shoe. That’s outdated. This year it’s moving to the best all-around cycling shoe. THe RC903 is the shoe you want for basically any road cycling you are doing. It’s the best of the best.
Hiplok DX1000 Bike Lock: 25% Off

There was a time when bike locks were pretty simple. If you didn’t value your bike much then a cable lock might be what you used but the advice was to grab a quality U-lock and call it good. That time is long gone. In the modern world a quality U-lock will fall to a portable angle grinder in seconds.
If you value your bike you need a lock that can handle an angle grinder and this is the best there is. I have personally tried to cut these with an angle grinder and it it’s not happening.
Now a lot of enthusiasts will say, no problem I never take my bike somewhere I need to lock it up. Except that bikes stolen from garages, or “secure” bike rooms, is an incredibly common occurrence. One of these locking your bike in your garage is the best insurance you can have.
CamelBak Podium Steel VSS Insulated Water Bottle: 20% Off

Old school water bottles are an excellent opportunity to ingest mold and microplastics, plus they require regular replacement which contributes to plastic waste. Metal bottles are better for your body and for the environment, but there’s an actual performance advantage also. Because you can’t squeeze a metal bottle, Camelbak utilizes a vent system that makes it far faster to drink. There’s almost no downside, and 25% off makes it an easy purchase.
Garmin Edge 550: 20% Off

Think of this as a two-for-one listing that offers two choices. While the Garmin Edge 1050, listed below is the computer I consider the best on the market, it remains a major investment even on sale. The Garmin Edge 850 and Garmin Edge 550 offer essentially the same flagship features in a more compact form. The trade-off is slightly less battery power—though still more than enough for almost any ride—and the screen smaller but still the same high resolution and brightness.
The primary difference is the interface. The Garmin Edge 850 features both a responsive touchscreen and physical buttons, while the less expensive Edge 550 is a button-only unit. The 1050 relies almost entirely on its touchscreen for navigation. Simply choose the price, battery life, and interface that fits your riding style; everything is currently on sale. You can read more info in our Garmin 850 and 550 launch coverage.
Feedback Sports Velo Wall Bike Storage Rack: 20% Off

I have a lot of bikes and not a lot of room. I wrote an entire article about how I manage to store bikes and one of the products I featured is this. You can see from the image, I’ve got expensive bikes on it and I’ve used it for years. You do need to be able to drill into a wall but otherwise these are my favorite ways to get a bike on a wall.
Feedback Sports Rakk 2.0 Bike Storage Stand: 20% Off

Now if you would rather not, or can’t drill into a wall then use the Rakk 2.0 You can see this in every single bike picture I take here on Velo and I also have one that I use for whatever bike I’m riding tomorrow morning that I have in the kitchen. These are dead simple, don’t drop bikes, and they even work well to bring along on to a trail head.
Salsa Warbird C GRX 820: 18% Off

I own a Warbird and it might be one of the greatest gravel bikes ever made. The model was replaced this year but the Warbird is the bike that defined gravel racing by prioritizing comfort over long distances. That focus makes a bike that manages to fill almost every niche of gravel pretty well. If you search around on the site a little there are other builds available but it doesn’t matter which one you pick, the Warbird is a great buy.
Garmin Edge 1050: 14% Off

The market for cycling head units moves fast, but it wasn’t long ago that I published a long-term review of the Garmin Edge 1050 detailing how it has exceeded my expectations over the last two years. I consider this the best unit on the market, but the premium hardware comes with a high price tag. Seeing it for $100 off during this sale definitely softens that blow.
