Ht: 5-11 Wt: 165
DOB: June 16, 1993 In: Trinidad, Bolivia
First Tennis Memory: In my city when I was young, like five years I enjoy a lot to play with my parents and my friends and not just tennis, a lot of games outside the court too.
Tennis Inspirations: I think for sure my inspirations… Nadal, Federer, Djokovic. But the most, I think, because in Bolivia, we don’t have too many players so I have to try to build the street to … if you want to dream to play tennis. You have to go this street, you know? You understand? This is the inspiration. (Yes, blaze your own trail.)
First Famous Player You Met Or Encountered: Kei Nishikori in Madrid (2019 2R, first time playing a top ten player, lost 57 57.)
Greatest Career Moment: A lot. Davis Cup in Bolivia against Dominican Republic, we won. We go up to first group. So it was the first time in the history of Bolivia to go up to play Davis Cup in the group 1. This is one. When I play Nadal in Australia is another. When I go to Tokyo and I play against Djokovic.
Most Painful Moment: When I was young, like 20 years, I retire for one year. I don’t have money to play. So this I think, the break of my life.
Funny Tennis Memory: When I travel with my daughters and my wife (Liz). So when I travel with them I enjoy it a lot.
Best You Ever Felt On Court: Against Dominic Thiem at Roland Garros third round (2022).
Funniest Players Encountered: On the Tour? … Kyrgios I like. Moutet. And Bublik too. Because I think sometimes the tennis needs this type of player. I know some people hate that profile but I think it’s important for the tennis.
Why Do You Love Tennis: Because all the matches is one fight. You fight with your opponent, with your mind, with your physical, with a lot of things. This is so important in the life. Not only in the tennis.
Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: Dulce de leche.
Interesting fact: Hugo owns an ice cream business with his father in Bolivia.
