“Dmitry Bivol will make his highly-anticipated return this Saturday in Ekaterinburg, Russia, where he will defend his WBA and IBF light heavyweight titles.
Standing in the opposite corner will be Germany’s Michael Eifert, the IBF mandatory challenger, who has been patiently waiting for his shot. The 28-year-old took step-aside money to allow the scintillating pair of bouts between Bivol and Artur Beterbiev to take place and determine the division’s undisputed champion.
There is little known about “Diesel”, who has only boxed once since his stunning upset victory over Jean Pascal in Canada back in 2023, a night in which he travelled into enemy territory as a huge underdog. He will need a feat even more tremendous than that if he is to upset the apple cart in the Urals.

Following his historic undisputed triumph over Beterbiev, Bivol underwent successful surgery on a back injury. During his time away from the ring, he has watched on as his former WBC title was claimed by David Benavidez, while the possibility of a trilogy bout with Beterbiev still looms large over the division.
Bivol will now look to get rounds under his belt once again in a stacked Light Heavyweight division. With several challengers waiting in the wings, Saturday presents the perfect opportunity for the champion to make a statement while also proving he has returned healthy and refreshed following surgery. Callum Smith appears to be edging closer towards a world title opportunity, with the WBO expected to order the bout, although the title itself will not be on the line this weekend due to the location of the contest.
The Russian’s camp for this contest has been extensive. Preparations first began in Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan, before continuing in Antalya, Turkey, where Bivol sharpened his conditioning and tactics ahead of fight night. The disciplined approach has become synonymous with Bivol throughout his career, with his methodical Soviet-style system centred around repetition, balance, footwork and precision.
Despite already cementing his legacy as one of the finest Light Heavyweights of his generation, Bivol is not short of assignments.. A blockbuster clash later this year remains a strong possibility, whether that comes in the form of a trilogy with Beterbiev, a showdown with Benavidez, or the growing list of contenders attempting to secure a shot at his belts.
For now, however, the focus remains on Ekaterinburg, where Bivol begins the next chapter of his reign.
