Danny Mackey is the founding coach of the Brooks Beasts Track Club, now in its twelfth year!
RunBlogRun #1: What are your thoughts on Tempo Runs for high schoolers?
Danny Mackey: They tend to go too fast. I suggest keeping the pace at 25 seconds slower than their current mile average pace over a 5k. So, if they are racing at six minute pace currently, then Tempo pace should be 6;25 per mile.
RunBlogRun #2: We suggest a tempo run for high schoolers limited to 20 minutes?
Danny Mackey: That sounds about right for high school runners.
RunBlogRun #3: Suggestions for where to run Tempo Runs?
Danny Mackey: On flat places, perhaps a track or paths (Editor’s note: better to have the site with little traffic).
RunBlogRun #4: What about a recovery day after Tempo Day?
Danny Mackey: Keep the recovery days very easy. Time for overall time for easy run, do not worry about pace, keep it really, really easy!
