Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares was named the team’s nominee for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy on Friday.
This award is presented annually to the player who best demonstrates leadership on and off the ice and who has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution within his community. The King Clancy Trophy was first handed out following the 1987-88 season and given to Lanny McDonald.
Tavares has long been a prominent figure in community work beyond the rink, headlined by his charity foundation
The John Tavares Foundation. Established in 2020, the foundation is dedicated to ensuring that children across Canada have the necessary support and tools to actively participate in their communities and explore their inner passions. Through collaborations with grassroots organizations and non-governmental organizations, they have helped provide underprivldege communities get access to food, resources, activities, and connection.
For instance, back in December, the Tavares foundation partered with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Foundation.
On the ice, Tavares continues to be an offensive contributor on the Leafs and among their lone bright spots on what has otherwise been a difficult season for the team. At the time of filing, he leads the team in goals with 30 and is second in scoring with 69 points behind only William Nylander. It is the eighth time Tavares has surpassed the 30 goal mark while all but one of his 17 career seasons have resulted in him scoring at least 20 goals.
He is in the midst in the first season of a four-year contract he signed with the Leafs on June 27 which carries a AAV of $4.38 million. While he had the opportunity to seek a much higher salary elsewhere, Tavares admitted he took less because he wanted to remain in Toronto and was happy with his role on the team.
