Ashley Allard’s shot from the slot deflected off junior goaltender Mari Pietersen’s pads and into the path of senior defender Meghane Duchesne-Chalifoux. Duchesne-Chalifoux skated to the trickling puck and fired a one-timer from the left circle into the top right corner, beating Pietersen on the glove side.
Her goal, with just 7.3 seconds remaining in regulation, sealed a victory for No. 7 UConn, 3-2, over Boston University women’s hockey at Walter Brown Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Duchesne-Chalifoux’s goal snapped BU’s four-game unbeaten streak, which dated back to Nov. 14.
The Terriers (4-11-2, 4-6-2 HEA) had a couple of chances in the opening minutes. However, as UConn settled in, BU struggled to get to the middle of the ice in the offensive zone and did not create any dangerous opportunities the rest of the period.
BU killed off the only penalty of the period, recovering with relative ease from a bench minor for too many players.
UConn (13-3-2, 6-1-1 HEA) outshot the Terriers, 11-4, in the opening frame.
Senior forward Lilli Welcke opened the scoring at 4:17 of the second period, beating graduate goaltender Tia Chan high glove side from the bottom of the right circle.
Twin sister Luisa Welcke and freshman defender Avery Supryka picked up assists on the play.
Sophomore defender Keira Healey was whistled for a tripping penalty at 13:44 of the second period, and the Huskies capitalized 10 seconds later.
UConn won the opening draw and cycled the puck around before finding junior forward Livvy Dewar, who beat junior netminder Mari Pietersen with a between-the-legs redirect in front of the net.
Freshman defender True Thompson was whistled for a slashing penalty against Sydney Healey at 15:11 of the second period. Healey fell hard and exited through the tunnel.
Healey was not on the ice during the power play, and BU came up empty, failing to register a shot on goal. Healey returned to the ice before the conclusion of the second period.
Allard, a junior forward, gave the Huskies a 2-1 lead at 2:08 of the third period. The junior forward collected a rebound at the right circle dot and fired a shot past the stick side of Pietersen.
Supryka found an equalizer at 15:53 of the third period, firing a wrister past Chan from the Hockey East logo in front of the blue line.
