This edition (May 29, 2026) of NHL Trade Talk Recap includes three quick storylines from around the hockey world. The Canadiens proved their rebuild is real, even if the playoffs ended in an ugly way. The Oilers got a relief check after Evan Bouchard walked away from a scary Worlds hit (though his tournament’s over). And, the Maple Leafs look poised to grab Gavin McKenna at No. 1 while Ivar Stenberg still lingers as a tempting alternative.
Canadiens’ Run Was Real. The Future’s Bright Even After the Beatdown
The hangover from that Carolina drubbing stings, but don’t let one series erase what Montreal did this spring. This was a legit breakthrough. The kids showed up, surprised everybody, and proved the rebuild’s not just talk; it’s ahead of schedule. Front offices are already whispering about how well-set the Habs are for the next decade.
There are holes to fix and lessons to learn, but the core of Suzuki, Caufield, Slafkovsky, Demidov, and Hutson is real and cheap for years. With cap room coming and more prospects on the way, Montreal’s not rebuilding anymore. They’re building something that could be scary down the road.
Canadiens Eliminated: Still Way Ahead of Schedule Despite Tough Playoff Exit

Bouchard OK, But His World Championship Is Over After a Scary Hit
The good news is that Evan Bouchard appears to have avoided a serious injury after that brutal hit by Ryan Lindgren at the Worlds. He’s been in touch with the Oilers and is expected to recover. The bad news is that his tournament is done, and Lindgren was tossed for the illegal check to the head.
There’s relief that this likely won’t wreck his offseason. Training camp is months away. But it’s still jarring after Bouchard’s hot tournament (6 points in 8 games) and career season in the NHL. Expect more chatter about stars risking injury in international play, even if this one looks like it’ll be OK.

Leafs Likely Leaning McKenna, But Stenberg Looms
Everyone’s been buzzing about Gavin McKenna going first to the Maple Leafs. He’s a Canadian winger projected to be an elite offensive player. But Toronto’s never predictable. There were whispers they might pick Ivar Stenberg, a slick Swedish forward, or even trade down for more assets.
A Chris Johnston report says Maple Leafs staff actually flew up to Whitehorse to meet McKenna, which feels like a pretty big hint they’re leaning his way. Teams visit prospects all the time, but that trip to McKenna’s home training spot instead of his usual BC base looked intentional.
Stenberg still makes sense on paper, especially with Mats Sundin watching Swedish games and the youngster turning heads at the Worlds. McKenna skipping Team Canada adds a wrinkle, but this doesn’t smell like a shock upset. It’s more like Toronto sticking with the safe, high-upside Canadian forward.
