Report: Canucks ask for permission to speak to Leafs special advisor to GM Shane Doan
As the Toronto Maple Leafs review their own internal candidates, one member of the front office is gaining interest from across the league.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported Wednesday that the Vancouver Canucks sought permission to speak to Maple Leafs special advisor to the general manager Shane Doan. Doan has operated in this role since June 2023, and is currently working in tandem with Brandon Pridham and Ryan Hardy. Toronto is looking to find its next president of hockey operations and/or general manager, after parting ways with general manager Brad Treliving on March 30.
Vancouver fired general manager Patrik Allvin on April 17.
Doan previously worked as the chief development officer for the then-Arizona Coyotes. He was an excellent player, posting 402 goals and 972 points in 1,540 games, before retiring after the 2016-17 season.
It’s unclear which role Doan may be interested in, but he’d be a smart hire for the Canucks and could potentially excel as a first-time general manager. Doan is universally well-liked within the Leafs organization and is considered to be a bright, affable talent among the executive ranks.
Vancouver reportedly has been granted permission to speak to former Buffalo Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams about the vacancy. Adams was fired on December 15. Immediately thereafter, the Sabres caught fire with the nucleus of the team brought in by Adams through the draft or trades.
It’s a fascinating time for the Maple Leafs and Canucks, as both clubs are expected to undergo major changes this summer. Toronto and Vancouver are both widely expected to dismiss Craig Berube and Adam Foote, respectively, as its head coaches after hiring its next president of hockey operations. Toronto is reportedly very interested in New York Rangers assistant general manager Ryan Martin and Boston Bruins assistant general manager Evan Gold for its general manager position. Sunny Mehta emerged as an early favourite, before being named general manager of the New Jersey Devils.
