Cape Verde GK Vozinha’s Popularity Skyrockets By 1,000,000 After Surprising Spain, Holding Pedri, Lamine Yamal Goalless

Cape Verde produced one of the biggest results of the 2026 FIFA World Cup so far by holding tournament favorites Spain to a goalless draw in Atlanta.

Much of the spotlight fell on veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, whose heroics held Spain and their star-studded attack with the likes of Pedri at bay throughout the match. The 40-year-old not only claimed FIFA’s Man of the Match award but also saw his social media following explode to over a million after the final whistle.

Cape Verde’s Goalkeeper Vozinha Explodes With Over 1 Million Followers After Stopping Spain

Vozinha reportedly had around 50,000 Instagram followers before kickoff. Within hours of the final whistle, that figure surged past one million as fans from around the world flocked to his account after holding European champions Spain goalless.

Much of the rise was fueled by Brazilian broadcaster CazéTV, whose pundits urged viewers during the match to follow the 40-year-old goalkeeper after his remarkable first-half display.

Fans responded immediately. Vozinha’s follower count climbed into the hundreds of thousands during the game, crossed the one-million mark shortly after full-time, and has since grown beyond two million.

Spain dominated possession with 74% of the ball, completed more than 700 passes, and fired 27 shots, including seven on target. Still, they repeatedly found themselves denied by Vozinha and a stubborn Cape Verde defense.

The veteran goalie made 7 saves, 6 of them from inside the penalty area, while also recording 3 high claims and preventing an estimated 1.46 goals, according to Sofascore. The performance earned him FIFA’s Man of the Match award.

Cape Verde’s organization was equally impressive. Despite spending long stretches without possession, Bubista’s side committed just one foul throughout the entire contest. According to OptaJoe, that is the fewest fouls conceded by any team in a FIFA World Cup match since records began in 1966.

Spain even turned to substitutes, bringing Lamine Yamal only in the 71st minute, hoping the teenage star could unlock the defense. But Cape Verde held firm to become just the seventh nation in World Cup history to avoid defeat in its debut World Cup match.

Cape Verde’s achievement becomes even more remarkable given that the island nation has a population of just over 500,000, making it one of the smallest countries ever to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.

They arrived as complete outsiders, ranked 64th in the FIFA rankings, but during the 90 minutes, they stood toe-to-toe with one of the favorites for the title and emerged with a historic point.

Speaking after the match, the 40-year-old admitted he was overcome with emotion.

“I cried after the game because I grew up with my grandparents when I was a kid, and they could not be there,” Vozinha said. “They passed away a few years ago.”

His mother was unable to travel to the United States for the match.

“My mum could not be here either for a VISA issue, and the money we had to pay for it. We did not manage to do this in time,” Vozinha revealed.

The emotions were understandable. For a goalkeeper making his FIFA World Cup debut at 40 years old, Vozinha had already beaten the odds. By the end of the night, he had stunned Spain and picked up a million or two new fans along the way.
