Caps Lose in OT, But Ovi Reaches 1,000 Goals! – The Morning Skate

The Capitals hosted the wagon that is the Colorado Avalanche Sunday.

The Caps got on the board first via a stellar lob pass from Connor McMichael to the receiving Justin Sourdif for the breakaway wrister to give the Caps the 1-0 lead. This was Sourdif’s 14th goal of the season and the Caps now have 30 goals by rookies this season which is 3rd most in the NHL.

Then we didn’t see a goal till early in the 3rd. Logan Thompson went behind his net to move the puck but he did so right to an Av’s player who found a crashing Gabe Landeskog for an easy goal to tie it at 1.

Then after a bouncing puck was failed to get cleared at the left circle Nicolas Roy was left open for the wrister to beat LT. 2-1 Avs.

Then with 5 minutes left in the game the Capitals were on the power-play. Where stop me if you’ve heard this before Alex Ovechkin scored off a one timer from the left circle on the power play to the tie the game at 2. With this goal Alex Ovechkin has joined Wayne Gretzky as the second player in NHL history to score 1,000 career goals in the regular-season and playoffs combined. This was Ovi’s 923rd regular season goal to add to his 77 playoff goals. Ovi is only 16 goals from passing The Great One for the most combined goals.

In overtime it that was controlled by the Avs Necas found a crashing Brock Nelson for the easy tap in goal for the OT win. Pretty lazy effort on the Caps on the ice for the goal to be honest.

Ethen Frank left the game after Devon Towes hit him into the Av’s goal post. (not ideal)

Getting a point vs a great Avs team is at least a tiny win especially with our playoff chances hanging in the balance. The Capitals take on the St. Louis Blues next.
