Royston Barney-Smith wants world title shot in 2027

Royston Barney-Smith is eyeing a world title shot in 2027 ahead of his next test against Conor McIntosh.

Barney-Smith’s bout with McIntosh for the vacant British and Commonwealth super featherweight titles will be his first since a statement win in October on the undercard of Fabio Wardley’s win over Joseph Parker.

He faced WBO European super featherweight champion Danny Quartermaine, who was unbeaten going into the contest, with his only blemish a draw against Jack Bateson following a cut.

Barney-Smith made easy work of the fight, winning most of the rounds comfortably, with the judges’ scorecards reading 98-90 and 100-88 on the remaining two.

The 22-year-old gave his thoughts on the fight and was honest about how tough it really was.

“I prepared for a much harder fight than what it was,” Barney-Smith told proboxing-fans.com.

“If I didn’t prepare the way I did, it wouldn’t have gone that far.”

Barney-Smith faces McIntosh on the undercard of Friday’s rematch between Nathaniel Collins and Cristobal Lorente in Glasgow.

“I am feeling good, a little bit skinny, but I can’t complain.

“I am expecting everything and more, but at the same time I know I have prepared the best I can.”

The Dorset man is keen to fight for a world title in 2027 and has dreams of fighting in America.

“St Mary’s Football Stadium or the MGM [Grand in Las Vegas].

“I would like to be British, Commonwealth and European champion, and by the beginning of next year I’d like to fight in an eliminator or for a full world title.”

The up-and-coming super featherweight was a standout amateur before turning professional and revealed some of his most notable achievements.

“I won two European gold medals, a European bronze, I had 28 international fights for England and won 27 of them.

“It is almost like a racehorse really. You do want to push and go all the way from the start, but you need that jockey to hold them back and tell them when to go.

“That is where your coaches and your promoter have to hold you back.

“Every boxer wants to go as quick as they can. They [promoters] know the full extent of what you can do and they will nurture your talent all the way until you get there.

“It is hard, but I am grateful at the same time.”
