Cincinnati grabbed a lead early on in this one. JJ Bleday fouled off the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the 1st inning but the second pitch he saw from Zac Gallen landed a handful of rows deep into the seats in right-center for a go-ahead solo home run.

In the bottom of the 2nd inning the Reds were threatening after getting back-to-back singles from Matt McLain and Jose Trevino. Edwin Arroyo hit a line drive the other way, but Tommy Troy made a diving catch to rob him of a hit and the home team came up empty in the inning. In the top of the 3rd Troy crushed a game-tying home run to lead off the frame.

Cincinnati was able to get back on top in the bottom of the inning. Nathaniel Lowe picked up a 2-out single to keep the inning going and then came in to score when Eugenio Suarez doubled off of the wall in right center.

After giving up the home run in the 3rd inning, Andrew Abbott kept Arizona off the board in both the 4th and 5th inning, but his pitch count was at 95 after that and Cincinnati went to the bullpen and Tejay Antone to begin the 6th. Ildemaro Vargas would reach on a 1-out error on a grounder to Nathaniel Lowe. That would come back to haunt the Reds as Geraldo Perdomo hit a go-ahead 2-run home run deep into the seats in right field.

The Reds were able to tie things up in the bottom of the inning. Noelvi Marte got a slider that caught too much of the zone and he hit it 448 feet for a game-tying home run off of the upper deck facade in left-center.

It was another home run in the 8th inning that gave the Diamondbacks the lead once again. Zach Maxwell took over to begin the inning and gave up a leadoff home run just out of the reach of a leaping Marte in right field to make it 4-3.

With a line of storms closing in on Great American Ball Park Cincinnati was able to get back-to-back 1-out singles from Sal Stewart and Nathaniel Lowe to move the tying run into scoring position. A wild pitch then moved both runners up a base. The Reds were unable to do anything from there as Eugenio Suarez and Noelvi Marte would both strike out and end the inning. As soon as the inning was over the grounds crew rushed to the field to put the tarp onto the field and put the game in a delay.

The storms passed quickly and the teams took the field after a delay of about an hour and 10 minutes. Chris Paddack headed to the mound for Cincinnati to start the 9th. He walked the first batter of the inning and as the saying goes – walks will haunt. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second and then a looping liner into center plated an insurance run to make it 5-3 for the visitors.

Matt McLain led off the bottom of the 9th inning with a 4-pitch walk. The next three batters went down in order as Arizona held on for win on Sunday and the series victory.

Key Moment of the Game

Gabriel Moreno hitting a go-ahead home run in the 8th that wound up being the winning run.

Notes Worth Noting

The two teams stranded seven runners each. Arizona went 1-4 with runners in scoring position. The Reds went 0-5.

The pitchers that Cincinnati sent to the mound for the 8th and 9th innings finish the day with ERA’s of 10.00 and 7.21 on the season. Do what you will with that information.
