Cincinnati Reds vs New York Mets – May 26, 2026

The Cincinnati Reds picked up a victory on Monday evening in New York to open up the 3-game series. Tonight they will look to make it two in a row over the Mets to give themselves a series win. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10pm ET.

Starting Lineups

Starting Pitchers

Chase Burns

It’s been a fantastic season for Burns in 2026. His ERA is currently the 2nd best in the National League. In nine of his 10 starts he’s allowed two runs or fewer. During May he’s allowed just two runs over 25.0 innings.

The splits do exist for Burns and they are quite big. Left-handed hitters aren’t hitting for much average, but they have walked plenty against him and when they have found hits they’ve shown solid power output. Right-handed hitters are doing absolutely nothing against him this season.

David Peterson

The 2026 season has been an up-and-down one for Peterson. He threw 5.1 shutout innings to open his season but then gave up 14 earned runs in 14.1 innings of his next three starts. The Mets then put him in the bullpen where he allowed one run in 7.0 innings over two long-relief appearances before making a start to end April where he gave up seven runs in 3.2 innings. In May he’s pitched well, posting a 2.50 ERA in 18.0 innings and hasn’t allowed a home run.

The splits against Peterson this year have been interesting. Right-handed hitters are making a lot of contact and walking at a solid clip while also hitting for a high average. They aren’t showing much power at all against him, though. Lefties are struggling to make contact against him, are walking less, but they are hitting for solid power against him – matching the exact same number of each extra-base hit as righties in exactly half as many plate appearances.

News and Notes

Hunter Greene threw his 1st bullpen session

After having surgery on March 11th to remove bone spurs in his elbow, Hunter Greene got back on the mound today for his 1st bullpen session post surgery. We’ve got a video clip and a few pieces of perhaps useful information from our piece earlier today if you wanted to check that out.

Does Chase Burns need a third pitch?

Daniel R. Epstein took a look at Burns this morning over at Baseball Prospectus (subscription required to read the article). He wondered if Burns needed to be using a third pitch, in this case that pitch is the change up. There’s a lot of stuff in the article, but the conclusion he came to was that no, Burns doesn’t need the change up right now.

The productive out!

Craig Brown, a Kansas City Royals writer, had an interesting article (this is a free read!) in his newsletter today. He looked at how many runs each team has scored this season while making an out. His Royals have scored 34 runs out of their 207 this season while making an out. That’s 16.4% of their runs, which is far and away the highest rate in MLB. The Reds were right in the middle with 26 of their 229 runs being scored while making an out (11.4%, which ranked 16th in MLB).
