Club confirms what is happening with four Newcastle United goalkeepers

The club have given an update on the futures of four Newcastle United goalkeepers.

They have revealed that Aaron Ramsdale is heading back to Southampton now that his loan contract is ending.

They also confirm that John Ruddy and Max Thomson are leaving.

However, Mark Gillespie will remain at St James’ Park.

Both Gillespie and Ruddy had been primarily helping on the coaching side last season and that set to continue for the Geordie keeper, maybe also set to be third choice keeper for the 2026/27 season.

Newcastle United also formally confirming that Kieran Trippier, Matt Targett and Emil Krafth are officially departing on 30 June 2026 upon the expiry of their contracts.

The Newcastle United official release stating: ‘Newcastle United can confirm the club’s retained list for summer 2026, with a further four senior players following Kieran Trippier and Emil Krafth in departing upon the expiry of their contracts. Goalkeeping duo John Ruddy and Max Thompson are among those moving on, while fellow shot-stopper Mark Gillespie will continue his role in the squad for a further year. Both Ruddy and Thompson have been valued members of the goalkeeping unit in recent years, with Academy product Thompson also gaining senior experience during loan spells away from Newcastle. Also departing is full-back Matt Targett, who has just completed a season-long loan at Championship side Middlesbrough. Targett, one of Eddie Howe’s first signings, totalled 47 Magpies appearances following his arrival from Aston Villa in January 2022. Elsewhere, goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale will return to parent club Southampton following the culmination of his season-long loan. Ramsdale featured 23 times in all competitions for the Magpies this season. All players depart the club with the thanks and best wishes for the future from everybody at Newcastle United.’
