CM Punk has always been open about his messy exit from WWE. Nevertheless, his recent comments show just how disconnected he became from wrestling after leaving in 2014. Brock Lesnar vs. The Undertaker at WrestleMania 30 is one of the most important matches in WrestleMania history. Moreover, he has a significant history with both men. Despite that, Punk didn’t bother at all.
Apart from the controversial result, things were intense behind the scenes, too. The Undertaker reportedly suffered a concussion during the match. Moreover, the decision to end the streak was made by Vince McMahon on the same day.
CM Punk says he didn’t tune in for the Brock Lesnar vs Undertaker WrestleMania match
Speaking on the All The Smoke podcast, Punk said that once he walked away, wrestling wasn’t even on his mind. Unlike many former wrestlers, he completely stopped watching and didn’t feel any urge to come back.
This disconnect was so strong that he didn’t even bother to watch WrestleMania 30. That night, Brock Lesnar defeated The Undertaker and ended his 21-0 streak.
Even though it was a massive moment, the former AEW star said he didn’t watch it live. Instead, his attention was on his wife, AJ Lee, who was still performing in WWE at the time.
“My wife was still there. She still wrestled for like a year after I left. And I remember I didn’t watch anything until that next WrestleMania. And I was like, ‘Well, I’m going to order it because I’m going to watch my wife,’” Punk said.
However, Paul Heyman kept calling him that day, asking him to tune in for Lesnar’s match, but Punk refused. It was when Heyman told him that Lesnar would face The Undertaker, Punk understood why it was a big deal.
“I remember Paul Heyman calling me and being like, ‘You need to watch Brock’s match.’ And I was like, ‘I’m not watching Brock’s match. I don’t give a shit. I’m not watching it.’ I’m going to watch my wife. And he kept persisting, ‘You need to watch. You need to watch. You need to watch.’ And then it dawned on me. I was like, ‘Wait, who’s he wrestling?’ He’s wrestling The Undertaker. And I went, ‘Oh, okay,’” Punk said.
Looking back, CM Punk said he did miss the locker room and the people, but he had no interest in watching wrestling during that period. “No, I didn’t really have an itch or anything like that. I missed the boys, I missed hanging out in the locker room. I missed the camaraderie,” Punk added.
But at that time, none of the matches mattered to the WWE World Heavyweight Champion. He had completely moved on from wrestling after dealing with injuries, creative issues, and frustration in WWE.
