CM Punk just torched the myth of Roman Reigns

CM Punk traded pipe bombs for verbal chemical warfare, torching the myth of the Tribal Chief and setting the stage for his collision with Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 42.

The closing segment between the two on Monday’s Raw wasn’t just a war of words. It was a tactical preview of their championship clash. The bell hasn’t rung, but the psychological battle is on, with Punk mocking a challenger he claims to have already beaten.

“You hate me? I’m in your head,” Punk smirked, weaponizing the admission Reigns made after their first face-to-face meeting following the Royal Rumble.

Reigns didn’t backtrack. Instead, he doubled down on his feelings, his scowl giving way to a grin.

When they last spoke, Reigns claimed he had the final say on whether WWE would bring Punk back. This week, he explained why, as derisively as he could, cutting Punk to the bone, all while stripping him of his persona and referring to him by his real name.

“This is what you’re missing, Phil,” Reigns started. “If you didn’t have that title, I’d be indifferent to you. You wouldn’t exist. You wouldn’t even be on my radar.”

He added that the reason “we” — meaning himself and WWE — allowed Punk to return was to “entertain the 30- to 40-year-old virgins that live with their mom and dad,” sell a few T-shirts, and “maybe” move tickets in Chicago, Punk’s hometown.

What Punk was not brought back to be, Reigns said, was world champion. He called him a liar, accusing him of telling fans he was happy to be back while complaining backstage to Reigns’ cousins, the Usos. In Reigns’ view, this was proof that Punk is unfit to lead.

Reigns went further, saying he would wring every ounce of value out of Punk on a John Cena-style retirement tour before sending him to NXT to coach the prospects that Reigns plans to smash in the future.

For the first time, Punk’s smug facade cracked, but his spirit remained unbroken. He fired back, questioning this “we” that Reigns kept throwing around before launching truth grenades that tore down the Tribal Chief’s persona.

”You’re all alone,” Punk said. “You’re alone on your bus. You’re alone in your room. Your cousins aren’t with you anymore. There’s no more Shield to help you do anything.”

As Reigns fumed, Punk took credit for Paul Heyman abandoning him. Punk then turned Reigns’ proof of him being a liar into proof of Reigns’ loneliness by admitting that it was he, not Reigns, hanging out with the Usos.

After accusing Reigns of being unable to handle things on his own — a frequent critique of Reigns’ 1,316-day reign as Undisputed Universal Champion — Punk tossed a vial of acid on Roman’s soul.

Punk vowed to bury Reigns at Mania while simultaneously ending his loneliness, saying, “I’m gonna bury you next to your father,” referring to Sika Anoaʻi, who passed away in 2024.

Reigns stood stunned as Punk walked off, his anger giving way to something closer to hurt. Fan footage after Raw showed Reigns walking to the dressing room, still stewing on what just happened.

Monday’s segment played out like a match. If WWE follows that script at WrestleMania, Punk is likely to grab the early edge, mocking and baiting. Reigns regroups and fires back. Just as he seems in control, Punk goes lower, dirtier, doing whatever it takes.

All that sets up the central theme for the main event in Las Vegas: can Reigns, on his own, overcome every mind game and cheap shot to prove himself against the best in the world? And if he does, will it end with the acknowledgment he demanded from the start?

WWE’s challenge will be to maintain and develop this story over the next six weeks. Reigns’ next appearance on Raw comes March 16 in San Antonio, Texas, giving WWE time to let the storyline breathe and plan its next moves after the latest path on the road to WrestleMania steered directly into a war zone.
