A&E is diving deeper into the MMA world with a brand-new UFC-focused television project, and the guest lineup includes WWE star CM Punk alongside UFC Hall of Famer Ken Shamrock.
The network officially announced “UFC Rivals,” a two-episode special event premiering Sunday, June 21 at 8 PM ET/PT. The series will explore some of the most iconic rivalries in UFC history through archival footage, interviews, and roundtable discussions.
Television host and longtime UFC fan Mario Lopez will lead the discussions with a panel that includes CM Punk, Michael Bisping, Miesha Tate, and Ken Shamrock. According to the official press release, the series will focus on legendary UFC feuds that helped shape the company into a global brand.
“‘UFC Rivals’ combines compelling archival footage, exclusive interviews and a dynamic roundtable discussion with fan favorite UFC experts to explore the unforgettable moments and high-stakes competition behind the fiercest showdowns ever fought inside the Octagon.”
The first episode will center around the rivalry between Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz, which became one of the defining storylines of the UFC’s rise in popularity during the early 2000s.
“The episode explores how the explosive feud not only captivated fans but helped launch the UFC into the mainstream.”
The second episode of the night will spotlight Georges St-Pierre vs. Matt Serra, including Serra’s shocking upset victory that stunned the MMA world.
“The panel breaks down the fight, its aftermath, and the moment that stunned fans worldwide.”
CM Punk’s inclusion on the panel adds another layer of crossover appeal considering his history competing in UFC after leaving WWE in 2014. Punk fought twice inside the Octagon before eventually returning to professional wrestling years later.
Meanwhile, Ken Shamrock’s involvement brings another unique connection between MMA and pro wrestling, as Shamrock became one of the earliest stars to successfully cross between both industries.
The series is being produced by UFC for A&E, with Dana White serving as one of the executive producers alongside Craig Borsari, Chris Kartzmark, Tucker Greene, and Joyce Lynda Valdes. “UFC Rivals” will also stream on the A&E app and through AETV.com following the broadcast premiere.
