CM Punk is expected to transition to WWE SmackDown, but new details suggest he may make one more appearance on WWE RAW before that move becomes official.
According to Dave Meltzer, plans have been in place for Punk to shift brands following his absence after WrestleMania 42. The move is reportedly tied to a potential storyline with Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes. The decision is also said to be influenced by WWE’s effort to better balance its roster, as RAW is currently viewed as having more top-tier talent.
In an update from the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Meltzer noted that Punk has been pushing for a return on the July 6 episode of RAW, which will take place in the Chicago area. The location is significant, as it is Punk’s hometown, making it an ideal setting for his comeback before any official transition to SmackDown.
Meltzer also addressed speculation surrounding Punk’s absence. While the time off has largely been described as a creative decision to prepare for his next program, he indicated that the situation is not entirely without complications.
“His departure was basically to get him ready for moving to Smackdown and eventually a program with Rhodes, but to say there are no issues at all, that wouldn’t be correct. It’s not as bad as some have made it out to be, but it’s not like there aren’t any issues at all.”
Punk has not appeared on WWE programming since the RAW following WrestleMania 42. At that event, he dropped the World Heavyweight Championship to Roman Reigns. The next night on RAW included a tease of a future Undisputed WWE Title match involving Punk and Rhodes, further fueling expectations for a major storyline upon his return.
Meanwhile, Rhodes is set to defend his title in a triple threat match against Gunther and Sami Zayn at Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia. The outcome of that match could shape WWE’s direction heading into SummerSlam.
Additionally, the King of the Ring final between Oba Femi and Jey Uso at the same event will determine the next challenger for a world title at SummerSlam, with the winner able to choose between facing either Reigns or Rhodes.
At this point, Punk’s return timing remains a key detail, especially if WWE moves forward with plans for a high-profile feud involving Rhodes on SmackDown.
