The last episode of WWE SmackDown before WrestleMania 42 didn’t end with high action but with real emotions. Cody Rhodes and CM Punk cut an emotional promo together, and at one point, Rhodes almost broke down in tears.
Cody Rhodes started the segment in his high-energy style, asking the crowd what they wanted to talk about. But then, he quickly got serious. He said he wasn’t interested in past WrestleMania losses or rumors involving names like The Rock, Travis Scott, or who should not be there at all (Pat McAfee). Instead, he focused on his upcoming match against Randy Orton for the world title.
Cody also brought up the Viper’s past, his 2009 version, and questioned how much he has changed.
A few moments later, CM Punk came out wearing a formal suit, as the Hall of Fame ceremony was right after the show.

What followed was a mix of jokes, respect, and some tension.
Rhodes asked Punk if he was there to kick him in the balls, but Punk laughed it off and said he was there to support him. He talked about how far they have both come and how they are now top stars main-eventing WrestleMania.
Punk ignored McAfee and advised Rhodes to stay focused against Randy Orton. He then mentioned Rhodes’ legacy, including Dusty Rhodes, and the influence of stars like John Cena. He then said that he’s proud of Rhodes, shook his hand, and told him to get the job done at WrestleMania.
As Punk was about to leave, Rhodes stopped him, and that’s when things got emotional.
Cody Rhodes praised CM Punk’s journey, talking about how he made his own path in wrestling. He mentioned how the World Heavyweight Champion trained under Harley Race and connected with legends like Terry Funk. He said Punk didn’t just return to WWE, he came back even better.
Rhodes even compared him to greats like Shawn Michaels and Macho Man Randy Savage, saying Punk could become the next “Mr. WrestleMania.” He thanked Punk for sharing the ring with him.
Then he said something very touching.
“And if it means anything, someone that you took a great deal of counsel with, and you made a promise to a long time ago…My dad would be extremely proud of you,” Rhodes said to Punk.
As he was finishing his sentence, Rhodes almost broke down in tears, remembering his father.
Both stars shared a hug, and just when the music hit, seeing the emotion, Punk decided to lighten the mood. He said that he would save the tears for after he beat Roman Reigns, and both then went to celebrate their titles with the crowd.
