Colorado Rockies news: Rockies reinstate Mickey Moniak, option Sterlin Thompson

The Colorado Rockies announced that they have reinstated OF Mickey Moniak from the 10-day Injured List and have optioned OF Sterlin Thompson (No. 13 PuRP) to Triple-A Albuquerque in his place.

Moniak was originally placed on the IL on May 22nd with a right ankle injury suffered when he collided with a wall in Pittsburgh. Moniak and the Rockies hoped it would be just 10 days, but the swelling in his foot wouldn’t go down, hence the extension. He completed a rehab assignment in Triple-A Albuquerque before coming back on Monday.

Moniak told reporters that his rehab was “good” and that he “felt healthy.”

“[I] just went down there, mostly to test out playing in the outfield and getting some at-bats to get the timing down,” he said. “Luckily it was a quick trip, and I’m happy to be back.”

He also assured reporters that his ankle is “just about 100%.”

“It’s just as healthy as it’s going to get,” he said. “I think I gave it a good time off. Definitely glad I did. Obviously, going to the IL is never fun, but I think the rest and recovery was obviously needed. And yeah, I feel confident to go out there and play.”

Moniak also noted that the recovery took a little longer than he expected, since he’d played through a similar injury in 2024.

“I think the biggest thing was catching it early so I didn’t create any bad habits or start compensating or making it worse,” he said. “It was something that we knew from the beginning there wasn’t really a timeline. The doctor said just kind of go as is and keep strengthening it. If it feels good, it feels good.”

And Moniak is happy to be back on the field with his teammates and help the Rockies win more baseball games.

“Coming back from the IL after being down for a month, I think I’m just excited to play baseball again,” he said. “We have a goal, and that goal is to win each and every day. I think no matter who rolls in, that goal never changes.”

To make room for Moniak, the Rockies optioned Sterlin Thompson, who was recalled when Moniak went down originally.

In 27 MLB games this year, Thompson has slashed .232/.312/.377 with two home runs and four doubles. He’s been a bit up-and-down, but with the emergence of Cole Carrigg (No 4 PuRP) — as well as the uptick in production by Jake McCarthy and Troy Johnston — Thompson was the odd man out.
