Photos on Facebook from this past Friday’s Ann Arbor Community High School prom at Washtenaw Golf Club reminded me of several articles I had seen in old papers while researching the club’s history.
Numerous articles over the past 100 years indicate that Washtenaw Country Club was a social center for the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti areas, hosting dances, business meetings and other community events.
Newspapers in the early 20th century were full of notices of community events, and even of the comings and goings of community members. For example, it is common to see blurbs announcing that Mrs. So-And-So of Ypsilanti went to visit her cousin for two days in Detroit; or that Mr. Whomever was visiting family from Ann Arbor from Philadelphia.
That said, here are a few of the dance announcements at Washtenaw Country Club.

In 1923, an announcement in the Ann Arbor News noted that the Aphi Pi sorority would have a tea and formal dance at Washtenaw Country Club after the Minnesota – Michigan game.
For what it’s worth, the game was played at Ferry Field, and was won by Michigan 10 – 0. Michigan’s coach was Fielding Yoast.
Michigan’s team finished 8-0, including a 33-0 win over Ohio State.

An April 29, 1938 blurb noted that two fraternities and a sorority, Chi Psis, Theta Delta Chis and Alpha Delta Pis would hold their spring formal at Washtenaw.

In 1939, the Delta Gamma Sorority held their Spring Formal at Washtenaw Country Club. I am fascinated by the fact that the paper mentioned who was escorting whom and the dresses that a couple of the women would wear. I presume that they were from families of note.

And finally, there is this 1943 notice from the Junior Chamber of Commerce. They held their Spring Dance at Washtenaw.
There are others, but I fear I would bore you, dear reader, more than I already have.
