Complete IPL Winner List from 2008 to 2020

As one of the biggest cricketing extravaganzas on the planet, the Indian Premier League draws the attention of millions of cricket fans across the globe. IPL is one of the few leagues where cricket lovers can witness all their favorite players at one place. Over the years, the IPL has seen a number of franchises that were successful in lifting the coveted IPL trophy.

Here’s a look at the complete IPL winner list, from the inaugural edition to the thirteenth season of the league.

IPL 2008 Winner: Rajasthan Royals

IPL 2008 was the inaugural edition of the tournament. While a lot of stars players were the part of the eight franchises, underdog Rajasthan Royals beat all the odds and lifted the trophy for the first time. Rajasthan Royals at their time was led by talented Shane Warne, and comprised a number of other young lads, including Ravindra Jadeja, Aditya Angle and Swapnil Asnodkar.

In the final game of the league, the Royals won the toss and elected to bat first. Batting first, Chennai Super Kings managed to post a total of 163 on the board. But Shane Warne and Co elegantly chased it and won the game by 3 wickets at DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. Skipper Warne received the Man of the Tournament award for his all-round performance in the game.

IPL 2009 Winner: Deccan Chargers

Deccan Chargers, who were occupying the bottom spot in the inaugural edition of the league, worked against the odds and were able to lift the IPL trophy in 2009. The victory came on the back of some incredible hitters like Rohit Sharma, Andrew Symonds and Herschelle Gibbs.

On the matchday, Deccan Chargers elected to bat first and posted a total of 143 runs at the loss of 6 wickets at the Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg, South Africa.  In reply, Royal Challengers Bangalore managed to score only 137 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in 20 overs. Adam Gilchrist was awarded the player of the tournament title as he contributed 495 runs with the bat and accounted for 18 dismissals behind the stumps.

IPL 2010 Winner: Chennai Super Kings

After reaching the playoff stage for third time in a row, Chennai Super Kings were finally able to lift the coveted IPL trophy in the 3rd edition of the league. It was the leadership of Mahendra Singh Dhoni and the likes of Matthew Hayden and Suresh Raina that helped the Kings in posting a 22 runs victory at the DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai.

In this instance, CSK opted to bat first and registered a score of 168 runs at a loss of 5 wickets. In reply, the Indians failed to chase the target as they only accounted for 146 runs at a loss of 9 wickets. Here, Sachin Tendulkar was awarded the player of the tournament title as he registered a whopping 618 runs that year.

IPL 2011 Winner: Chennai Super Kings

In 2011, Chennai Super Kings became the first team in the history of the league to win the IPL title consecutively for the second time. This time they were facing Royal Challengers Bangalore at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. CSK elected to bat first and posted a huge target of 205 runs for a loss of 5 wickets from 20 overs.

In reply, RCB failed to chase the total as they managed only 147 runs after losing 8 wickets from 20 overs. This led to CSK winning the match by 58 runs. Here, Murali Vijay was crowned as the Man of the Match as he scored 95 runs in the game.

IPL 2012 Winner: Kolkata Knight Riders

This was the third instance when CSK managed to reach the finals stage in the league, but they failed to lift the trophy as KKR defeated them at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, Kolkata. Batting first, CSK posted a challenging target of 191 runs for Kolkata.

In reply, Gautham Gambhir and Co elegantly chased down the target KKR accounted for 192 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. Manvinder Bisla was devastating in the game as he scored 89 runs from 48 balls. Sunil Narine was named player of tournament for his 24 scalps in 15 matches, and Chris Gayle and Morne Morkel received the orange and purple cap respectively.

IPL 2013 Winner: Mumbai Indians

This was the second instance when Mumbai Indians reached the playoffs stage and faced the same opponents as their last time, CSK. The two sides locked horns at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Here, Mumbai Indians clinched their first IPL trophy as they were able to defeat the Kings by a 23-runs margin.

Batting first, Mumbai Indians were able to post a total of 148 on the board, all thanks to Kieron Pollard’s amazing knock of 60 runs off 32 balls. In reply, CSK tumbled down on just 125 as Lasith Malinga, Mitchell Johnson and Harbhajan Singh each accounted for two wickets respectively. Kieron Pollard was crowned as man on the match on the final’s night, with Dwayne Bravo and Michael Hussey garnering the purple and orange cap respectively.

IPL 2014 Winner: Kolkata Knight Riders

Under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir, Kolkata Knight Riders were able to reclaim their IPL title after a gap of one season. On the final’s night, Kolkata was facing Kings XI Punjab at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Batting first, KXIP were able to post a mammoth 199 on the board, all thanks to an exceptional century by Wriddhiman Saha.

But with the help of Manish Pandey’s brilliant 94 off 50 balls, KKR were able to chase down the huge target and lift the IPL trophy for the second time. Manish Pandey was named as man of the match in the game, with Glenn Maxwell garnering the man of the series title for his all-round performance.

IPL 2015 Winner: Mumbai Indians

In the 2015 edition of the IPL, Mumbai Indians were crowned champions as they registered a terrific victory over Chennai Super Kings at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. This was the third time that the two sides were facing each other in the final match of the league. Batting first, Mumbai Indians were able to post a massive target of 203 runs for the Kings.

In reply, CSK managed just 161 runs at a loss of 8 wickets and lost the game by a whopping 41 runs. This was their second consecutive loss against Mumbai Indians at the finals. Rohit Sharma was awarded the man of the match title in the game, with KKR’s Andre Russell receiving the player of the tournament award.

IPL 2016 Winner: Sunrisers Hyderabad

Working against the odds, Sunrisers Hyderabad were finally able to win their maiden IPL title as they defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. In the game, Sunrisers elected to bat first and posted a humongous total of 208 runs at a loss of 7 wickets in 20 overs.

RCB was in great form at the start of the chase but after losing three big wickets: Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers, the rest of the squad failed to chase the total by 8 runs. RCB’s Virat Kohli was awarded the man of the tournament award as he scored 973 runs from 16 innings.

IPL 2017 Winner: Mumbai Indians

On the night of the finals of IPL 2017, Mumbai Indians were crowned champions as they defeated Rising Pune Supergiant by a single run at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad. Despite having a very slow start, Mumbai Indians were able to post a total of 128 runs at a loss of 8 wickets from 20 overs.

Mumbai Indians, however, managed to restrict Rising Pune Supergiant to 128/6 and won the game by just run. With this victory, MI became the first team to lift the coveted trophy for the third time in the league. With 316 runs and 12 wickets, RSP’s Ben Stokes was named player of the tournament that year.

IPL 2018 Winner: Chennai Super Kings

IPL 2018 was the comeback year for the Kings as they returned on the field after serving a two years ban. On the final’s night, Chennai Super Kings was facing Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Opting to bat first, SRH managed to post a total of 178 runs for a loss of 6 wickets in 20 overs.

In return, CSK managed to chase down the humongous target and scored 181 runs with 9 balls to spare. Shane Watson played an amazing knock of 117 runs off 57 balls and was awarded the man of the match title in the game.

IPL 2019 Winner: Mumbai Indians

Lifting the IPL trophy for the fourth time, Mumbai Indians became the most successful team in the history of the league. Once again, Mumbai Indians were facing Chennai Super Kings at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Hyderabad.

Batting first, Mumbai Indians posted a total of 148 runs at a loss of 7 wickets in 20 overs. However, they were able to restrict CSK to 148/7 in 20 overs and won the game by just a single run. With 510 runs and 11 wickets, Andre Russell was awarded the player of the tournament title in the league.

IPL 2020 Winner: Mumbai Indians

The 13th edition of the Indian Premier League saw Mumbai Indians lifting the coveted IPL trophy for the fifth time. The final match of IPL 2020 was a clash between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals. Batting first, Delhi Capitals posted a decent total of 156 runs, thanks to Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant’s amazing knocks of 65 and 56 runs respectively.

In reply, Mumbai Indians elegantly chased down the target of 157 runs with 6 balls to spare. For Mumbai, Rohit Sharma played a blistering knock of 68 runs, with 5 fours and 4 sixes to his name. Trent Boult was named the man of the match for his 3 scalps that came at an economy rate of 7.50.
