Could a Baker Mayfield trade happen amid contract standoff with Buccaneers?

Baker Mayfield spoke publicly for the first time this offseason on Friday at his youth football camp. He revealed that contract extension talks with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are “not anywhere close” to where he envisioned.

Entering the final year of his three-year, $100 million deal, the 31-year-old set a firm deadline: get something done before training camp begins, or it’s all football from there.

He went on to say, “I’d love to be here long-term, and as of right now, that’s not exactly the case,” Mayfield said. “But I’m under contract for 2026.”

He emphasized his focus on winning a Super Bowl in 2026, but the message was clear: Tampa Bay needs to step up or risk losing its gritty leader after this season.

The numbers and the gap

Mayfield has been a consistent starter for the Bucs since signing in 2024. Coming off a 2025 season with over 3,600 yards and 26 touchdowns, he’s proven to be a reliable game manager with big-play ability. Yet he currently ranks near the bottom among projected starting quarterbacks in average annual value. With the market exploding every off-season, 11 quarterbacks now average over $50 million per year, led by Dak Prescott at $60 million.

Speculation around a new contract points to a three to four-year deal, around $50-55 million. The Bucs have publicly expressed interest in keeping him long-term, and GM Jason Licht has made it a priority. However, the gap in expectations, combined with Mayfield’s self-imposed deadline, creates real tension. If no extension materializes by camp, Mayfield will play out 2026 on his current deal, potentially boosting his value for 2027 free agency or a franchise tag.

Why this could lead to trade speculation

While both sides prefer a resolution in Tampa, the standoff opens the door to hypothetical trade scenarios if negotiations collapse. His proven experience, leadership, and pocket mobility make him an appealing option for QB-needy teams.

Those potential landing spots, if things were to go south, include the Arizona Cardinals, New York Jets and a possible reunion with the Cleveland Browns as teams to watch.

What’s next for the Bucs and Mayfield?

Mayfield insists he’ll remain the same fiery leader regardless, but the pressure is now on Licht and ownership to close the gap. A deal before camp would stabilize the franchise; failure to do so could turn 2026 into a prove-it year with massive implications for 2027.

Mayfield has defied doubters throughout his career. Whether he cashes in long-term in Tampa or tests the market elsewhere, this contract saga could define the next chapter for one of the NFL’s most resilient quarterbacks and set back a strong franchise as of late.
