Dalton Smith vs Adam Azim is a fight that’s been rumoured in recent years, and continues to be spoken about following Azim’s destructive win against Steve Claggett. Smith had to withdraw from his planned WBC super lightweight title defence against Alberto Puello on June 6. In the build-up to Josh Padley vs Aqib Fiaz, Frank Smith of Matchroom Boxing and Dalton Smith spoke to DAZN, where Frank Smith delivered a brutal assessment of Dalton Smith vs Adam Azim.
Dalton Smith vs Adam Azim
Smith (19-0, 14 KOs) smashed his way onto the world stage with a brutal victory over the feared Subriel Matias. That victory gave the Brit the WBC super lightweight title. He was then due to face Alberto Puello on June 6, before suffering an injury in camp, thus leading to the cancellation of the fight.
Azim (15-0, 12 KOs) looked sharp against Claggett and was almost punch-perfect, stopping the tough Canadian in the third round. It appears that Dalton Smith vs Adam Azim will not be next.
Frank Smith gives honest assessment on Smith vs Azim
Speaking to DAZN about Dalton Smith vs Adam Azim, Frank Smith did not hold back on his assessment:
“Adam Azim is not on Dalton Smith’s level. Dalton Smith went out there and won a world title, has done everything the hard way. I’m not disrespecting Adam Azim personally, but he’s not on Dalton Smith’s level.
“If he goes and wins a world title, cool. If it’s a unified world championship, fine.”
Frank Smith was then asked if the only time Dalton Smith vs Adam Azim can be made is in a unification: “I think you can still make it, but everyone has to be sensible. I hear this talk about 50/50. It’s more like 80/20. This guy (points at Dalton Smith) has gone over to America and won a world title. He’s gonna do a huge crowd at Hillsborough. Adam Azim could barely do a 300,000 audience on the BBC the other day,” said Frank Smith.
