Darby Allin reached the top of AEW earlier this month, but one moment around his world title win meant more to him than anything else — having Sting there to see it happen.
Allin captured the AEW World Championship from Maxwell Jacob Friedman on the April 15 episode of Dynamite in Everett, Washington. Before the match, Sting was shown giving him last-minute advice backstage, and after the victory, he came out to celebrate with his longtime partner.
Speaking in a recent interview with Yahoo Sports, Darby made it clear that Sting’s presence carried deep meaning, not just because of their partnership, but because of the example Sting set for him throughout his career. While talking about what Sting represents to him outside the ring, Darby explained how much he respects Sting’s mindset and humility.
“Having there, I’ve said it to him before in private — I look up to him outside of the ring like no other. The fact that he’s climbed to the top of the sport, and he’s been the most humble, cool guy in the world, that’s all I ever wanted. I didn’t want to let any of the ego or the fame consume me, because this is just a 15-minute ride. I want to look at myself in the mirror when this is all done — and now I’m looking back at — and I feel Sting is the quintessential guy for that.”
Darby continued by explaining that Sting’s presence during the moment helped reinforce the lessons he learned from him, especially about staying grounded even after achieving something major.
“He’s so grounded. So to have him there, it was amazing. It was amazing because he could see that I was taking notes from him, and I didn’t walk around like I was the king of the world afterwards. I’m very grateful for it all.”
Sting also shared his perspective on their relationship, comparing his connection with Darby to the mentorship he once had with Ric Flair. He explained that while the dynamic wasn’t built on rivalry, there was still a strong sense of belief between them. While reflecting on that comparison, Sting described how their bond developed over time.
“I had somebody like Ric Flair that had the ability to make or break me. And I think I probably had the ability to do the same thing with Darby, even though we weren’t opponents, we were on the same team.”
He added that their connection formed naturally because of what they saw in each other.
“But I saw something in him, he saw something in me, and the rest just clicked.”
Darby isn’t slowing down after winning the championship. He is scheduled to defend the AEW World Championship again on tonight’s episode of Dynamite from Fairfax, Virginia, where he will face Brody King. That defense comes just one week after he successfully retained the title against Tommaso Ciampa.
With Sting watching from the sidelines and Darby continuing to build his legacy as champion, their relationship remains one of the most talked-about partnerships in AEW today.
