David Benavidez has cooled talk of an Oleksandr Usyk fight.
Saudi Arabian boxing chief, Turki Alalshikh called for an Usyk-Benavidez showdown after the latter destroyed Zurdo Ramirez in the sixth round to become unified WBO and WBA cruiserweight world champion on Saturday.
Benavidez is also the reigning WBC light heavyweight world champion and admits a potential clash with the unified heavyweight champion, who faces Rico Verhoeven on May 23 in Egypt, is not on his radar currently.
“Me having a competitive spirit, it definitely does interest me,” the 29-year-old said on The Ariel Helwani Show.
“You don’t know what’s possible until you make it possible.
“A lot of people think I can’t beat Usyk, but if I really put my mind to it and train for maybe a year, because I barely came up to cruiserweight, I can’t just go up to heavyweight like that.
“But if I train myself and I prepare myself, I can beat anybody in the world.
“But right now that’s not possible for me in my eyes.

“I want to be a reigning champion at 175 and cruiserweight.
“If I go up to heavyweight, I should forget about light heavyweight, because the weight difference is just way too big.
“But I’m never going to say never, because maybe in the future when I’m like 35, 36, we can go up to heavyweight.
“But right now, I’m just taking care of the cruiserweight and the light heavyweight division.”

‘The Mexican Monster’ is planning on returning to light heavyweight to pursue an undisputed title showdown with unified titlist, Dmitry Bivol, who faces Michael Eifert on May 30.
The unbeaten American says discussions have already taken place with the Russian’s team and Benavidez believes the bout will happen this year.
“We’re going after Dmitry Bivol,” he added.

“Now I won two more titles at cruiserweight.
“Now it’s time to capture the rest of the titles at light heavyweight.
“We’re already in talks.
“It will definitely happen by the end of the year.”
