The shift comes after a frustrating stretch. Morrell had been ordered last July to face Smith for the WBO interim light heavyweight title, but negotiations dragged without resolution. The situation worsened when Smith withdrew from the planned April 18 date due to injury, leaving the fight canceled with no rescheduled date in sight.
Rather than remain inactive, Morrell chose to stay busy. The decision is straightforward: maintain momentum and avoid being sidelined in a fast-moving division.
Chelli presents a different kind of test. Fighting on home soil, the British contender brings familiarity with the setting and crowd support. For Morrell, it will mark his first appearance in the UK, adding another layer to the assignment.
