Davis Webb earns ‘mad scientist’ Courtland Sutton praise

The Denver Broncos came within one win of a Super Bowl a season ago, but that didn’t stop them from making changes this offseason. At the risk of getting complacent, Sean Payton replaced offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi with QB coach Davis Webb to make the offense look a bit different next season.

Webb was a hot OC candidate around the league this offseason, so it didn’t come as much as a surprise to see Denver promote him in order to keep him around. Now, in his first offseason with the Broncos, Webb is already showing off.

The former NFL quarterback has been on Denver’s staff since 2023, so the veterans on the team already know that he is a wizard. On Thursday, Courtland Sutton gushed about Webb’s offensive mind at OTAs, via Zac Stevens of DNVR.

“The dude is a mad scientist when it comes to the offensive game,” Sutton said. “He spent the last three years now being able to learn the game under Coach Payton, who we all know is an offensive genius. Has one of the best offensive minds. To be able to have that amount of time to be able to learn the game from someone as talented and as special as Coach Payton, it’s ultimately allowed him to be able to master this offense that he’s been able to put together.

“It’s a combination of things that he’s learned from Coach Payton and things that he’s liked and seen from his own experience of playing and coaching in this league. I know that he’s ready. There’s not a thought behind it, I know that he’s ready.”

It remains to be seen if the Broncos’ offense improves under Webb, but Payton and company are hoping for a better unit than the up-and-down one that nearly cost them multiple games in 2025.

With former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jaylen Waddle now in the mix, Webb and Bo Nix have even more weaponry to deploy in 2026. If the new OC is the real deal, this Broncos offense has a chance to take off next season.
