Indian archer Deepika Kumari has made a strong start at the Paris 2024 Olympics, advancing to the Round of 16 in the women’s individual archery event. On July 31, Deepika secured her spot with a nail-biting shoot-off victory against Estonia’s Reena Parnat, followed by a convincing win over the Netherlands’ Quinty Roeffen.
Deepika’s opening match against Parnat was a thrilling contest, with both archers tied at 5-5 after five sets. The match was decided in a shoot-off, where both archers hit eight-point shots, but Deepika’s arrow was closer to the center, giving her the win.
In her Round of 32 match, Deepika faced Roeffen and won decisively 6-2. The Dutch archer’s off-target shot in the third set helped secure Deepika’s progression.
Deepika will now face World No. 13, Michelle Kroppen of Germany, in the Round of 16 on August 3. Another Indian archer, Bhajan Kaur, also advanced to the 1/8 Finals and will compete against Indonesia’s Diananda Choirunisa.
