Emerald Warriors Take on the King’s Cross Steelers at Twickenham Stoop

Union Cup 2025 Reunion

The Warriors Green squad featured many of the players who represented the club at Union Cup 2025 in Oslo, alongside several newer players who have stepped up throughout the season. For a number of players, it was also their first opportunity to play on a professional rugby pitch, making the occasion even more memorable.

Match Report

Played in very warm conditions, the match was physical and competitive from the first whistle. The Steelers opened the scoring and took a 14-7 lead into half-time, but the Warriors responded strongly after the break to level the game at 14-14. For long periods the contest could have gone either way, with both teams showing plenty of determination and attacking intent.

Captain Scott Hyland led by example throughout, while Peter O’Connor crossed for both Warriors tries, with Gearóid Ó Cualáin adding the conversions.

The hosts eventually pulled away in the final quarter, using their powerful forward pack and experienced backline to secure a 33-14 victory. While the scoreline favoured the Steelers, it did not fully reflect how closely fought the game had been for much of the afternoon.

Patrick O’Callaghan Plate

The match also saw the inaugural Patrick O’Callaghan Plate awarded to the King’s Cross Steelers, a trophy that symbolises the enduring friendship between the two clubs. Over the years, the Warriors and Steelers have shared countless battles on the pitch while working together to promote inclusion and grow the game within the wider rugby community.

A special thank you goes to the supporters who made the trip to London and to the volunteers who helped throughout the weekend. Whether cheering from the sidelines, helping with logistics or supporting players behind the scenes, they are a vital part of the club. Their commitment and enthusiasm help create the environment that makes days like this possible.

KXS 30 Year Anniversary and Gala Dinner

The celebrations continued after the final whistle with a Gala Dinner in the Twickenham Stoop Ballroom. Players, supporters and guests came together to enjoy a fantastic evening, recognising the achievements of Steelers members and reflecting on the club’s remarkable journey over the past 30 years.

Of course, the weekend would not have been complete without a social gathering afterwards. Members of both clubs rounded off the celebrations together at The Two Brewers, continuing a tradition of friendship that has existed between the clubs for many years.

Emerald Warriors President and Green Squad player Gary Gaughan perhaps summed the day up best: “It’s fair to say that whenever the Emerald Warriors and the King’s Cross Steelers share a pitch, you are guaranteed an absolute battle.”

The result may have gone the Steelers’ way, but the day was about much more than the final score. It was a celebration of inclusive rugby, of the friendships built through the sport, and of two clubs that continue to play an important role in growing the game for everyone.
