Former Australian spinner Brad Hogg believes that Rohit Sharma’s time as a Test cricketer has come to an end, and he should move on. The Indian captain last appeared in the recently-concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, where he scored just 31 runs in three Tests.

The seasoned batter is currently going through a low point in his career in the longest format of the game. He has scored just 164 runs in the last 15 Test innings, averaging at 10.93, with just one half-century.

After Rohit failed to perform in the three Test matches, the Indian skipper decided to opt out from the fifth and final Test of the series which was played in Sydney. Hogg has also questioned the way Rohit was getting out during the entirity of the series.

I think Rohit Sharma is probably finished right now out in Test level. He should have moved on. His form over the last 6-7 months has not been great,” Hogg said on his YouTube channel.

He is getting bowled, LBW and as an opener, those type of dismissals shouldn’t be happening early on in the innings. LBW, yes, but shouldn’t be getting bowled between bat and pad,” he added.

The former Australian spinner supported Rohit Sharma for his decision to opt out from the playing XI fir the Sydney Test. However, he also felt that the Indian skipper should have decided to make the same move for the fourth Test of the series in Melbourne.

It’s a little bit disappointing with the form now and I think the red-ball game, he did the right thing in Australia, probably should’ve done it in the Melbourne Test and let Gill play in that Test as well,” Hogg said in the aforementioned interview.

When it comes to ODI cricket, I still think he’s got a lot to offer. You can play a little bit more aggressively and with freedom as well. But age is starting to be wrong side of the ledger for Rohit Sharma. He’s had a wonderful career, there’s no doubt about that. I hope for his and India’s sake, he just it on a high whenever he wants to,” he concluded.

After losing 3-1 against India, Rohit will now be seen in action in the upcoming ODI series against England, which is going to be India’s last assignment before Champions Trophy 2025.
