Former India cricketer and head coach Ravi Shastri believes that it will be best for skipper Rohit Sharma to bat as an opener in the upcoming Test at the Gabba. Shastri was the team director when India won their maiden series in Australia in 2017/18 and was the head coach when the Men in Blue once again triumphed Down Under in the 2020/21 series.

In the previous match of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar series in Adelaide, Rohit batted at the number 6 spot which didn’t really prove to be beneficial for the Men in Blue as the skipper was only able to score 9 runs throughout the 2 innings.

Shastri believes that Rohit should move back to the opening slot as that is the position where he has flourished over the last 8 to 9 years.

“That’s where he’s (Rohit) been at his best over the last eight or nine years. not that he’s going to set the world on fire – he could – but that’s the place that’s best for him…If he has to do damage, if he has to throw the first punch, that’s the best place from where he can do it,” Shastri was quoted as saying by ‘The Age’.

Shastri also believes that whichever team will win the upcoming Test in Brisbane, will go on to win the 5-match series.

“I feel whichever team wins this Test match will win the series. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind. So it is very, very important that India get the balance right, because Australia have got the confidence back,” Shastri said.
