Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw by Chelsea in front of a frustrated crowd at Anfield in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Reds went ahead early on courtesy of Ryan Gravenberch, but fellow midfielder Enzo Fernandez drew the visitors level direct from a free-kick before the break.

Neither side were able to find a winner at Anfield, despite each side having a goal disallowed.

The Blues – with caretaker boss Calum McFarlane in charge – sit ninth in the table after the draw, while reigning champions Liverpool sit fourth and are on the verge of qualification for next season’s Champions League.

Off the pitch, it has emerged that a former Liverpool player has expressed a desire to take over the club in a managerial role.

As per indykaila News, Xabi Alonso’s representatives have informed Liverpool that the Spaniard’s first choice this summer would be to take charge of the Merseyside outfit.

The report claims that the former Liverpool midfielder’s agents have informed the Reds that Premier League rivals Chelsea have enquired about his availability, although Alonso himself would prefer to take charge at Anfield.

Alonso – who played more than 200 times for Liverpool during his playing days – had spells in charge of both Real Madrid’s academy and Real Sociedad B before being appointed as Bayer Leverkusen manager in 2022.

The Spaniard guided Leverkusen to their first ever Bundesliga title in 2023, before joining Real Madrid in the summer of 2025 ahead of the start of the current campaign.

His time in the Spanish capital didn’t go to plan, though, with Alonso overseeing just 24 wins from his 34 matches in charge of Los Blancos.

Chelsea are on the hunt for a new head coach having sacked Liam Rosenior in April, while Liverpool boss Slot is under huge pressure to turn his side’s fortunes around.
