Ferrari facing impossible task? Sky F1 experts assess the gap to Mercedes and Red Bull

Ferrari’s task of catching Mercedes and Red Bull is beginning to look increasingly difficult. The latest verdict from the track has reshaped the competitive order, highlighting a structural performance deficit that will be far from easy to eliminate in the short term. If Ferrari’s objective for the 2026 Formula 1 season was to erase the gap to the two leading teams, the latest indications emerging from the paddock have dealt a significant blow to those ambitions. The Prancing Horse now finds itself confronting a harsh technical reality that could force the team into a period of damage limitation while continuing to develop the SF-26.

The power unit remains the biggest concern

The most significant gap appears to lie at the heart of the cars: the power unit. Speaking to Sky Sport, former Formula 1 driver Matteo Bobbi expressed serious doubts about Ferrari’s ability to completely recover the lost ground.

“I think Lewis Hamilton told the truth: the gap in terms of the power units cannot be closed completely. Ferrari will be able to recover part of the deficit, but not all of it because they started from too far behind.”

A full year of development to recover

Telemetry data collected over the latest race weekend further confirmed Ferrari’s deficit to its closest rivals. Sky Sport commentator Carlo Vanzini analysed the current technical situation and looked ahead to the upcoming rounds on the Formula 1 calendar.

“From an engine perspective, I feel there is roughly a full season of development separating Maranello from the two leading teams. Around the paddock, people were saying Ferrari would push the ADUO allowance to its limit, and this weekend it became clear that there is about a year’s worth of engine development missing. However, I don’t think the problem is limited to the power unit alone. I believe the next two races will be extremely difficult, starting with the upcoming round in Hungary.”
