MS Dhoni was fit for the last two matches that Chennai Super Kings played against Lucknow Super Giants in Chennai and Lucknow, but opted not to feature because he did not want to disturb the team combination, sources told CricBlogger.
Even during Chennai Super Kings’ practice session, Dhoni was seen kicking a football after recovering from his ankle injury, indicating that fitness may not have been the reason behind his absence from the last two matches.
With two more matches to go, the five-time champions still have to rely on net run rate despite winning their last two games. Dhoni may still not return if he believes his inclusion could affect the balance of the side.
If CSK win only one of their remaining two matches, Punjab Kings will have to lose all their remaining games for Chennai to stay in contention. On the other hand, if CSK lose both their final league matches against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans, they will be mathematically eliminated from the playoff race.
Earlier, CricBlogger was the only platform to report that MS Dhoni could be available for the last two matches of the league stage. However, there was also a narrative that his calf injury had resurfaced and could disrupt that plan.
“If he is ready to play the last games, he has to be convinced that his presence can make a difference to Chennai Super Kings’ chances of qualifying for the playoffs,” the source added.
Whether MS Dhoni will return for next season is a decision only the former India captain can take. As far as Chennai Super Kings management is concerned, the promoters would be more than happy to have him for one more season, especially since he has not featured in any matches so far this campaign.
