Each NFL season produces a new set of pressure-packed quarterback narratives.
One group will try to cement their legacy, and another will try to prove that they are still elite. A third group of QBs are right in the middle where a down year or two can completely alter a career perception.
In 2026, these five quarterbacks are feeling more pressure than anyone else under center:
Fernando Mendoza
Mendoza is already under pressure, but it is the normal kind associated with a highly anticipated young quarterback. With Tom Brady attached to the Las Vegas Raiders, though, the entire dynamic changes.
Should Mendoza step into the starting job, once the scrutiny about any issues he has begins, the whispers of leadership, toughness and handling the spotlight will constantly be around him due to Brady’s ties to the team. It is a tough position to be in for any young passer.
Patrick Mahomes
Mahomes is under serious pressure heading into the 2026 season. After missing the playoffs for the first time in his career with a dismal record of 6-11, Mahomes has doubters he needs to silence. His numbers over the past nine years speak for themselves. A 100.8 passer rating and an average of 3,993.2 yards thrown every season. Some of those years, he threw for over 5,000.
Nobody is questioning if Mahomes forgot how to play football, but the moment things look bleak, people question the quarterback first. Now, Mahomes needs to prove that he and the Kansas City Chiefs are still contenders.
Justin Herbert
At some point, talent alone will not cut it. Herbert is heading into his seventh season and has yet to lead the Los Angeles Chargers to a playoff victory despite having one of the most physically gifted arms in the NFL. Herbert is doing everything right under center and has an average passer rating of 96.3. He also sits atop most of the NFL with an average pass completion percentage of 66.5%.
But each season plays out similarly. There are dazzling throws, impressive statistical numbers and ultimately frustration for Los Angeles come January. Until he wins meaningful playoff games, the criticism will persist, as that is simply how franchise quarterbacks are evaluated.
Jayden Daniels
Daniels had a tremendous rookie season with the Washington Commanders. He threw for 3,568 passing yards along with 25 passing touchdowns and had a passer rating of 100.1 But the perception of him has changed nearly overnight.
Injuries did undoubtedly affect parts of his 2025 season — he only played in seven games — but even without those, he was not consistently the same electric player he was in 2024. Defenses learned some things about Daniels, and that can only increase the pressure for 2026.
Drake Maye
Maye’s situation is slightly different because the pressure is not entirely tied to performance. The New England Patriots already lived through the Mac Jones rollercoaster, where a promising rookie season quickly turned into frustration and instability. Nobody in New England wants to relive that experience again.
There is also a completely different level of pressure that comes after taking your team to a Super Bowl, even if the season ultimately ended short of a championship. Once a quarterback proves he can lead a team that far, expectations immediately skyrocket.
What will the 2026 NFL season hold?
Pressure creates stars, and it can also make good quarterbacks suddenly look far worse much faster than anyone expects. By the time the 2026 season comes to an end, the perception of at least one quarterback on this list will likely look dramatically different than it does right now.
