Former ATP No. 33 Plays USTA Open – And Lost!

Former ATP No. 33 Plays USTA Open – And Lost!

Surely you remember Alex Bogomolov Jr. He was once ATP 33 in the world in 2011, he beat Andy Roddick in the US National 16s final in Kalamazoo. Bogie was a pro from 2002-2014 and earned almost $2m in prize money.

In his career Bogie beat Andy Murray in Miami, Jo Wilfried Tsonga in Cincy, Arnaud Clement in Newport. He also beat Tommy Haas and David Ferrer. The member of Russia’s Olympic and Davis Cup teams in 2012 was seeded 32 at 2012 Australian Open. He won a doubles title in Atlanta with Matthew Ebden.

At the end of 2011 Bogie won the ATP Most Improved Player Award. After accepting the award on court at World Tour Finals, Roger Federer congratulated him for the achievement which Bogie said meant more to him than the award itself.

Since retiring, Bogomolov has operated a tennis academy in North Carolina and coached Jack Sock. He has also competed in some USTA tournaments. In 2021 he played doubles with son Maddox but lost in the QF to Ian and Brad Freer 26 06.

Last year Bogie played in another USTA doubles tournament – Level 5 NJ Direct Tennis Open at Park Avenue Tennis with son Boris and lost first round 16 46 to Bernardo Mendia and Pablo Lopez Real.

Also at the same event in 2025 which was in Oakhurst, NJ, Bogie, at age 42 (he’s now 43), played in singles – as the top seed – and won three matches but lost in the semis to Jake Cohen 57 ret. Cohen lost the final to David Mizrahi 76 36 3-10.

It just goes to show how enormous the talent pool is in tennis today. That even elite ATP pros who could handle the likes of Murray, Ferrer, Haas on his best day- can’t dominate a 32 draw Level 5 USTA Open tournament.
