The Packers are about to face one of their former draft picks twice each season.
Chicago recently signed former Packers safety Anthony Johnson Jr., in all likelihood as a move intended to bolster one of the NFL‘s most lackluster special teams units this upcoming season.
Former Packers safety signs with the Bears
Johnson, chosen by the Packers in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft, spent parts of two seasons in Green Bay before playing out the 2024 campaign with the New York Giants.
In 21 career games, Johnson has produced 29 total tackles with one interception, and four pass breakups.
Chicago has overhauled its safety room this offseason, selecting Dillon Thieneman in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, out of Oregon, after signing former Seahawks Safty Coby Bryant in the early stages of free agency following the departures of veterans Jaquan Brisker, Kevin Byard, and C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
Johnson Jr. arrives as competition at safety and as a potential upgrade on special teams.
