Report: Former prospect Semyon Der-Arguchintsev considering a return to Maple Leafs

Prospect Semyon Der-Arguchintsev is reportedly considering a return to North America with the team that drafted him in the Toronto Maple Leafs.
“Semyon is considering the option of returning to Toronto,” Der-Arguchintsev’s agent Shumi Babaev told R.org’s Daria Tuboltseva. “We contacted former general manager Brad Treliving and expressed our desire to return to the club’s system. Now we are waiting for the appointment of a new general manager and to understand his position.”

Babaev added that there have yet to be any contract talks with Der-Arguchintsev’s current KHL team, HC Dynamo Moscow, at the time of filing and his contract is set to expire on May 31st.

Der-Arguchintsev was originally selected 76th overall by the Leafs in the third round of the 2018 NHL Draft from the Peterborough Petes of the OHL. He was part of their system between 2021 and 2023, spending the majority of that time with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, scoring a combined 76 points (25 goals and 51 assists) in 107 games.

He was able to appear in one NHL game on December 6, 2022 against the Dallas Stars before being promptly sent back down and never got another chance with the Leafs after that. Der-Arguchintsev opted to return to his native Russia in the summer of 2023 by signing with the KHL’s Chelyabinsk Traktor.

“I believe Semyon is ready for the NHL,” Babaev continued. “Of course, he has to be ready for the possibility of playing in the AHL, but there is no point in going there just for that. We are talking about a one-way contract with a salary closer to the league minimum.”

While his initial departure from the organization coincided with the appointment of Brad Treliving as Leafs GM, it is interesting that Der-Arguchintsev and his camp got in touch with Treliving about a potential reunion prior to his dismissal. It remains to be seen if the next regime will feel compelled to make the reunion a reality, but his camp is certainly keeping tabs on the search based on Babaev’s comments.

Der-Arguchintsev split last season with Traktor and Dynamo, recording 36 points (six goals and 30 assists) in 59 games while adding two assists in four playoff games.
