GAMEDAY PREVIEW: GB FACE HOSTS SWITZERLAND

Great Britain play hosts Switzerland this evening in their fourth game at the 2026 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship.

Face-off is 20:20 (19:20 BST) with a sell-out crowd expected at the Swiss Life Arena.

The hosts have made a flying start to the tournament and sit top of Group A with four straight wins and have scored 22 goals in the process.

After a opening-day win over USA (3-1), Switzerland also tasted success against Latvia (4-2) and Germany (6-1).

Yesterday’s 9-0 victory over Austria was led by two goals each for Nico Hischier, Damien Riat and Theo Rhochette.

Team News
Head Coach Pete Russell has a fully-fit squad to choose from and will name his 22-man line-up ahead of face-off.

It’s a special night for forward Robert Lachowicz who wins his 100th cap.

The host nation secured the silver medal in both 2024 and 2025 – and also suffered heartbreak at this year’s Olympics, squandering a two-goal quarter-final lead and falling 3-2 in overtime to eventual bronze-medalist Finland.

Newly-appointed Head Coach Jan Cadieux has plenty of NHL talent on his roster with former Norris Trophy winner Roman Josi and Janis Moser on the blueline and Nico Hischier, Timo Meier and Nino Niederreiter up front.

Netminder Leonardo Genoni, 38, remains on top form and had a 1.47 GAA and 94.6 save percentage at the Winter Olympics in Milan.

Previous Meetings
The two sides have met 22 times at major international tournaments with Switzerland winning 15 times, GB securing four victories and there have been four ties.

At the 2021 World Championship in Riga, Latvia, Switzerland won 6-3 with Liam Kirk scoring twice for Britain while Brendan Connolly was also on target.

The most recent meeting came at the 2024 World Championship in Prague, Czechia. Nico Hischier, Dean Kukan and Nino Niederreiter were on target for Switzerland and GB netminder Jackson Whistle saved a Kevin Fiala penalty-shot,
