The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially announced Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team, succeeding Rahul Dravid. Dravid’s tenure, which saw significant achievements including an ICC T20 World Cup victory, concluded after the recent tournament.
Dravid, who had extended his coaching stint beyond his initial contract, guided India to the finals of all three major ICC events during his term. Despite losing the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup finals to Australia, he capped his tenure with India’s T20 World Cup triumph last month.
Gambhir, a former opener and World Cup hero, will now lead the team for the next three and a half years, overseeing all formats until December 2027. His appointment comes after the BCCI held discussions with him during the IPL 2024, where he was instrumental in Kolkata Knight Riders’ title-winning campaign as a mentor.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah expressed his pleasure at Gambhir’s appointment on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting the new coach’s challenge to maintain India’s successful trajectory across formats.
New Support Staff Prospects
With Gambhir’s appointment, the BCCI will now focus on filling other key support staff positions. Alongside Dravid, the batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, and fielding coach T Dilip have also stepped down.
Gambhir has been given the liberty to select his own support staff. Reports suggest that he has recommended former India cricketers Abhishek Nayar and Vinay Kumar for the roles of batting and bowling coaches, respectively. Nayar, previously an assistant coach for Kolkata Knight Riders, and Vinay Kumar, who has coaching experience with MI Emirates in UAE’s ILT20, are yet to be confirmed by the BCCI.
Nayar and Kumar bring valuable experience and expertise, having worked closely with Gambhir in various capacities. Their potential appointments are seen as strategic moves to bolster India’s coaching team under Gambhir’s leadership.
