The Giants and star Dexter Lawrence have reached an impasse on a contract extension and the team continues to search for a trade partner for the defensive tackle, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Lawrence requested a trade on April 6 after failing to reach an agreement on a long-term deal the past two offseasons. The two-time All-Pro also said he won’t participate in the team’s offseason program that began last week.

New York is looking to find a resolution before the NFL Draft next week, Rapoport notes, with the first round kicking off on Thursday, April 23, in Pittsburgh.
SNY NFL Insider Connor Hughes reported on April 7 that there are many teams interested in making a trade for the three-time Pro Bowler.
As for what Big Blue could get in return for Lawrence, Hughes said, “The most common expected return value: a late 2026 first-round pick, a 2027 first-round pick, or a second-and fifth-round pick.”
Speaking with reporters on Tuesday as part of the pre-draft process, Giants GM Joe Schoen said he’d like Lawrence to be a part of the team in 2026 and is looking to resolve the matter.

“We’ve had good conversations with his representatives throughout the last five-six days. Coach [John Harbaugh], Dawn [Aponte], myself, we’ve all been in communication trying to find some resolution,” Schoen said. “I’ll echo what coach said last week, we’d like for Dexter to be here and at some point we’ll come to a resolution here, whatever that may be, we’ll see, but conversations have been really good. They’ve been productive, and again, we’ll see what happens more down the road, but I’m not going to say any more about it after that. That’s the update and that’s really all there is.”
Lawrence is currently signed to a four-year, $87 million deal with New York that runs through the 2027 season. He carries a $26.95 million salary cap hit for the 2026 season and a $26.45 million cap hit for 2027.
Schoen went on to say that he is always listening to trade offers, but noted that the Lawrence situation “hasn’t affected how we’re approaching the draft.” The Giants hold the No. 5 overall pick in the first round and would potentially be able to add another top prospect depending on the trade return for Lawrence.
