Despite its new protagonist, the next entry in the series retains its focus on intense combat and spectacular cinematic sequences while introducing us to a new host of deities who want to hinder Faye in her attempt to return back to her family.

Publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment and developer Santa Monica Studio did not share any details about God of War Laufey’s release date upon announcing it during June 2026’s State of Play showcase. All we know at the moment is that it is “coming soon.”

God of War Laufey Gameplay
Gameplay-wise, God of War Laufey relies on the formula popularized by 2018’s reboot of the series, appearing to bring back the single-shot camera technique that made both its modern predecessors stand out from their peers while also leaning into a faster, more stylish, and acrobatic style of combat.
Played from a third-person perspective, it equips Faye with a mythical blade, which she uses to slash foes both on the ground and while airborne.
Her Jötnar powers then allow her to “strike her golden palm at a foe with such force it detaches their soul from their body,” opening up windows in which she can “attack the soul directly, knock it into other enemies, and more.”
This enables Faye to make use of a variety of combos in a combat system that, although based on the foundations laid down by 2018’s God of War and its sequel, Ragnarok, also takes inspiration from the older games in the series.

God of War Laufey’s story picks up after her funeral. Waking up in the Everywhen, the afterlife of the gods, she discovers that her plans to protect Kratos and Atreus are at risk.
She thus sets off on a journey to return to her loved ones, which inevitably sees her facing “ruthless gods from across mythology [who] vie for power in a land overflowing with dangerous magic,” while meeting some rather unlikely allies.
Two figures opposing her are the gods Sekhmet and Begtse, who were featured in its original extended reveal trailer and who could prove to be significant hurdles in her attempts to rejoin her family.
However, with the natural flow of magic disrupted, leaving the Everywhen might prove much more difficult than it initially seems.
