Golf Course Beside Egypt’s Great Pyramid Set for Major Renovation by Robert Trent Jones II

The golf course sitting in the shadow of Egypt’s Great Pyramid of Giza is about to undergo a dramatic transformation.

California-based Robert Trent Jones II Golf Course Architects has been selected to renovate Mena House Golf Course, one of the most uniquely located golf venues in the world. The historic layout lies less than 250 yards from the Great Pyramid and has hosted golf since 1899.

Originally built as a royal hunting lodge in the 1880s, Mena House has long been tied to Egypt’s rich history and tourism culture. The redesign aims to preserve that legacy while modernizing the overall golf experience. Robert Trent Jones II previously worked on Egypt’s Madinaty and SouthMED golf developments.

The property is owned by Legacy Hotels, which is majority controlled by ICON, the hospitality division of Talaat Moustafa Group.

“Mena House Golf Course is unlike any other golf destination in the world,” Omar Hisham Talaat, chief business development officer for Talaat Moustafa Group, said in a statement announcing the project. “With the Giza Pyramids as its backdrop, the course offers an extraordinary opportunity to create a golf experience that is both globally distinctive and deeply rooted in Egypt’s cultural legacy.”

The renovation plans include a full redesign intended to maximize views and interaction with the nearby pyramids, along with several modern amenities. Planned upgrades feature a new social green designed for families and resort guests, contour lighting for nighttime play, a modern irrigation system and new turfgrass throughout the property.

Robert Trent Jones III, chief operating officer of the architecture firm, called the assignment one of the most significant projects in golf.

“We are honored to steward a course with more than 125 years of history and to shape its next chapter with care, precision and creativity,” Jones said. “Mena House has all the ingredients that make golf memorable: history, landscape, atmosphere and a setting people will never forget.”

Once complete, the renovated Mena House Golf Course is expected to become a centerpiece of Egypt’s growing golf portfolio and one of the game’s most visually striking destinations.
