‘Greed Is Crazy’ — NBA World Stunned As Trae Young Plans To Decline Wizards Player Option, ‘Expects Multiple Teams’ Max Interest’

Trae Young is set to enter this summer’s free agency pool, as the Washington Wizards star has unexpectedly decided to opt out of his hefty $48.97 million player option for the 2026-27 season.

Andscape’s Marc J. Spears broke the news on Wednesday, leaving the NBA world in disbelief as it anticipated the standout playmaker’s next move.

The NBA Player Guessing Game allows you to guess the NBA player based on clues about their team, division, height, jersey number, points, and experience.

Trae Young’s ‘Unforeseen’ Contract Decision Stuns NBA World

Young was acquired by Washington in early January, ending his seven-plus-season tenure with the Atlanta Hawks. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported at the time that the move “sends the 27-year-old to his preferred destination in the nation’s capital to be the lead guard for the Wizards.”

Quadriceps and back injuries ultimately limited Young to just five games in his first half-season in Washington, with the rebuilding franchise seemingly pulling the plug on its top players amid its league-worst 17-65 finish.

Between Young, the No. 1 pick in a loaded 2026 NBA Draft, star big man Anthony Davis’ looming debut, and an assortment of young talent, the Wizards are widely seen as a team that could take a sizable leap next season.

However, Young’s future is at least somewhat in question, as per Spears’ report, while Washington “remains the frontrunner for the four-time NBA All-Star, as he loves the team and DC, he still expects multiple teams’ max interest” in free agency.

ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel promptly reported that rumors of Young “looking elsewhere have been described by sources as ‘nonsense.’”

Still, that didn’t stop the NBA community on X from voicing their surprise, with many running wild with speculation.

“Young’s decision to opt out of his contract is an unforeseen development,” NBA analyst Jake Weinbach pointed out.

“Oh, wow!” Yahoo Sports’ Nekias Duncan exclaimed.

“Greed is crazy, man, ain’t no way he getting 50 million from another team,” popular parody account @HoodiiBron chimed in.

“Sending nurses, chefs, and therapists to @HousefromDC’s place,” The Ringer’s Bill Simmons quipped about his longtime friend and frequent podcast guest Joe House’s Wizards fandom.

As for Young’s potential landing spots outside of Washington, there was no shortage of possibilities floated.

“Where is he going? Trae Young to Milwaukee?” one user questioned.

“Now we can just sign Trae Young outright. … wonder if Brooklyn is willing to pay Young a max contract,” another pondered.

“Join up with the Spurs and take revenge against NY,” one observer suggested.

“He’d be fun in Miami,” another opined.

Given that Young turned down such a lucrative one-year salary despite few teams possessing the cap space to sign him outright, most signs point toward the 2025 NBA assists leader running it back on a max deal with Washington’s promising, new-look roster.
