Green and Trumpauskas take top titles at Cleveland 4*

Anna Green from the Draycott Club was the most successful player in the Cleveland 4* Championships at the Middlesbrough Sports Village on 30-31 May, winning both the women’s singles and Under-21 girls’ events. 

In the final of the Women’s Singles, Anna (pictured above alongside Alan Ransome OBE) defeated Binyu Zhao (Middlesex). Green produced her best form to win in three straight games. In the semi-final she enjoyed a comfortable win against Hannah Saunders (Cambridgeshire). In the other semi-final, Zhao beat Aneta Kula (Cheshire) in straight games.

The Men’s Singles was won by the Fusion veteran, Lorestas Trumpauskas (Kent) who in the final reversed his loss against Archway’s Adam Jepson (Cambridgeshire) in the Band 1 singles on the previous day. 

Trumpauskas had a close match in the quarter-final against Kyle Murphy (Middlesex) where he recovered from 2-1 down to take the match. He defeated Matthew Dodds (South Yorkshire) by 3-1 in the semis.  Jepson, who was the No 2 seed, had good wins against Adam Webster (Northumberland) in the semi-final and Marcel Ndongala (Middlesex) in the quarter-final.

The Under-21 Men’s Singles was won by Oliver Ho (Northumberland) who was the fourth seed, beating Marcel Ndongala (Middlesex) the top seed by 3 games to 1. Ho defeated second seed Joseph Ilia (Lancashire) in three straight games in the semis, while Ndongala beat Elliot Dring (Middlesex) by the same score.

In the Under-21 Women’s Singles Anna Green (Nottingham) beat Hannah Saunders (Cambridgeshire), although this match was closer than the women’s singles with Saunders winning the third game at 11-6 before Green clinched the title in the fourth game by 11-5.

The Veteran Singles was won by Andrew Wilkinson (Northumberland) who, after winning the first game in the final against Filip Wojtkowiak (Yorkshire), saw his opponent retire. Wilkinson won in four games against James Bradbury, also from Northumberland, in the semi-final while Wojtkowiak beat Sean Madden (Yorkshire) in straight games.

The Restricted Singles was won by second seed Matthew Dodds (South Yorkshire) after very close final with Daniel Fielding (Cambridgeshire). Dodds came through to the final with 3-1 victory over Bradley King (Northumberland) while Fielding won in 3-1 against Kyle Murphy (Middlesex).

The Banded events, which were played on Saturday, saw some very good matches. 

In the Band 1 singles the winner was Adam Jepson, who beat Lorestas Trumpauskas. Jepson recovered from 2-0 down to beat Trumpauskas by 11-5 in the decider. Jepson won in straight games in the semis against Matthew Dodds (Yorkshire) while Trumpauskas also won in straight games against Marcel Ndongala (Middlesex).

Jepson added to his victory in Band 1 by also winning Band 2 and beating Matthew Dodds in straight games in the final and Marcel Ngongala by the same score in the semis. Dodds scored a good win against second seed Adam Webster (Northumberland) in straight games after tough quarter-final against Daniel Fielding (Cambridgeshire), won 11-8 in the decider.

The Band 3 men’s singles was won by Kyle Murphy (Middlesex) with a 3-1 victory over Kamran Amin (Yorkshire). Murphy was taken to four games by Joseph Ilia (Lancashire) in the semis while Amin came from 2-0 down to beat Bradley King (Northumberland) in his semi-final.

The Band 4 men’s singles was won by Sean Madden (Yorkshire) against Harley Guy-Sinclair (Sussex), the No 3 seed, by 11-7 in the fifth. Madden also won in the fifth in the semi-final with Kamran Amin and also won a very tight quarter-final with Tudor-Andrei Eftinca (Yorkshire). Guy-Sinclair also had tough route to the final, going to five with Anatol Gasiorowski (Middlesex) in the semi-final.

The Band 5 winner was Nayan Pattni (Bedfordshire) who beat James Bradbury (Northumberland) in straight games in the final. Pattni also won three straight games against Valter Marques (Hertfordshire).  The close matches were in the top half of the draw where Bradbury beat Durham’s Charlie Burnside 11-8 in the decider in the semi-final.

Band 6 was won by James Bradbury (Northumberland) who won deuce in the fifth against Telemachus Galatis (Middlesex). Bradbury recovered from 2-0 down to win three tight games to take the title. Bradbury also had a very close match in the semi-final winning in five against Nayan Pattni (Bedfordshire).

The Band 1-4 event in the women’s singles was won by the Cambridgeshire Cadet Hannah Saunders who won the group, the closest match being against Aneta Kula (Cheshire) by 3-1. Saunders was also taken to four games by Cleveland’s Pat Clements. Saunders also scored a straight games win over No 1 seed Rebecca Savage (Yorkshire). To finish in second place, Kula also beat Savage in straight games.
