Green Bay Packers Urged To Sign 1x Pro Bowl Tight End To Backup Tucker Kraft

Back in 2023, the Green Bay Packers spent two of their top NFL Draft picks on tight ends. They first selected Luke Musgrave in the second round, believing that he would be a dangerous weapon in the passing game. In the third round, they took Tucker Kraft, believing that he would be a decent backup to Musgrave and great blocking tight end.

In the seasons that have followed, it has become apparent that Kraft is the star while Musgrave is not much more than a depth piece on their roster.

As the 2026 NFL regular season draws near, there are some questions regarding depth at tight end behind Kraft.

Green Bay Packers insider would like to see team sign David Njoku to back up Tucker Kraft

In his first two NFL seasons, Musgrave battled injury after injury and missed a lot of playing time. Kraft, meanwhile, emerged as the Packers’ best pass catching tight end in years. In 2024, he had 50 receptions for 707 yards and seven touchdowns. Last year, he had 32 receptions for 489 yards and six touchdowns in eight games played before tearing his ACL.

While Tucker was out, Musgrave had the chance to prove himself worthy of being taken with a second round pick. But he couldn’t. He continued to play inconsistently and now enters 2026 in the final year of his rookie deal without much hope of an extension.

Furthermore, Packers insider Matt Schneidman believes that Green Bay would be wise to sign free agent tight end David Njoku for some insurance at the position:

“I could get behind an Njoku signing. He’s battled injuries the last couple of years, but has been productive and a legitimate touchdown threat when healthy. He turns 30 in July but might improve the weaponry behind Kraft (I ain’t seeing it from Luke Musgrave) and provide some insurance as Kraft returns from his injury.”

Last year, Njoku had 33 receptions for 293 yards and four touchdowns in 12 games played. The season prior, he had 64 receptions for 505 yards and five touchdowns in 11 games played.

While injuries are a concern with him, the fact of the matter is that he presents a more proven option behind Kraft than Musgrave. It will be interesting to see if the Packers address the tight end position at all yet this off-season.
