I got to do a few group rides for work last week, and it reminded me of the delicate dance that is setting expectations. There’s always a temptation to get out ahead of your performance by making some excuses before you even start riding. That way, if you’re fast, everyone will be impressed by how well you’re handling adversity, and if you’re slow, nobody will blame you. So here are some of my favorites.
In all seriousness, one of the best parts about last week’s rides was the lack of excuses. Most folks just showed up and rode their bikes, which is always the dream. But I woke up feeling kind of funky, so if I’m slow tonight, blame Mercury!
