“He has got…”Saba Karim drops the name of Hardik Pandya’s challenger for T 20 captaincy

Shubman Gill will captain a young Indian squad in a series of five T20 matches against Zimbabwe, beginning on Saturday, July 6. Since India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, has said he will retire from T20I play after the World Cup final, and vice-captain Hardik Pandya is taking a break for this tour, the team’s selectors have chosen to trust Gill to lead a less experienced team. After Rohit’s retirement, there has been discussion about who will be India’s next T20I captain. Some people think Hardik, who has already led the team when Rohit was not available, might be the one to take on this role.

It is too early for the selectors to consider Gill for the role, said Saba Karim, former India wicketkeeper-batter, while adding that Hardik will most likely take over the reins at some point in time.

“In my opinion, the selectors shouldn’t make up their minds yet about who will lead the team in future although a captain is likely to come from among some number of aspirants. At the moment Hardik Pandya is the vice captain and I believe that his departure makes it more likely that he (Pandya) takes over.” Karim was quoted as telling Sports Now.

“Yes, The Indian selectors have always looked at Shubman Gill as a player who can play in all formats and they believe that he also got leadership traits necessary for moving forward as a team that is why the Zimbabwe series is going to be quite something to look forward to him not only as a batsman but also as the captain,” he added.
