Ever since Lewis Hamilton won the Barcelona Grand Prix, enthusiasm around Ferrari has skyrocketed. Some are already talking about a world championship challenge from the British driver, others are praising what they describe as miraculous upgrades, while some point to the benefits of the ADUO system. Amid all this excitement, Charles Leclerc has been pushed into the background almost like an old toy, as though he had not carried the Scuderia on his shoulders for years through mistakes, disappointments and failed projects.
Given his recent performances and a number of costly errors, it has become easy for some observers to overlook his raw speed. For others, the results achieved by his teammate are now casting an unfair shadow over the talent that Charles Leclerc has consistently demonstrated throughout his Formula 1 career.
Some particularly harsh criticism has also come from Lewis Hamilton’s fellow countrymen, who believe Ferrari should fully commit to the seven-time world champion and use the Monegasque driver in a supporting role to help close the gap to Kimi Antonelli.
“Leclerc had the time to build the team around himself and he didn’t do it. Let’s remember that he arrived after a mediocre season at Sauber, and he was offered this huge world champion-style contract a little too early. He was quick, and there were championship expectations around him. He was beating Vettel and winning a few races, so everyone was happy,” Matt Amys told Sky Sport UK.
The journalist then continued his criticism of the Ferrari driver.
“When Lewis arrived, he was struggling with the car, and Charles was happy. He looked good alongside Hamilton, but then Lewis woke up, built a team around himself and suddenly Charles found himself with blunt weapons,” he added.
